3

Relevance of the theme
 The theme has been chosen based on the movie- Swades because although this movie did not do very well at the box-office, it received universal critical acclaim and a cult following from Indian and other South Asian audiences around the world. Its characters are somebody whom people in our target segment (people from rural background) will instantly relate to. Also its popularity among rural people is huge and hence serves as a relevant plot for the villagers.  The character Mohan Bhargava would be somebody who after working for NASA for 12 years decides to return to his village in India where he encounters some harsh aspects of the villagers’ life. Among them is poverty, illiteracy, lack of electricity in the village etc. The story is about his endeavours to raise capital for his project and the difficulties he faces thereafter.

The Plot
The game is based on the movie ‘Swades’ starring Shah Rukh Khan and Gayatri Joshi. Mohan Bhargav has returned from USA to start a social initiative in his village. He wants to put up a power station in his village and for this he requires funds. Kaveri amma tells him to consult the villagers to get the required information. He meets Melaram, the Postmaster and Nanaji and discusses his plans with them. They suggest him about the means to raise money. Satisfied with their suggestions, he meets Kaveri amma and discusses his plans with her. On getting to know about his plans, Kaveri amma gets disturbed. She asks him to not to follow the advice given by the villagers. According to her, the Indian system of loan recovery is very crude and if he doesn’t pay his loans in time, he would get harassed by the concerned people and recovery agents. She asks other villagers to convince Mohan to not take loans and return back to USA. Mohan doesn’t pay heed to Kaveri amma’s words and goes ahead with his plans and borrows money from a bank. He fails in his attempt to set up the power plant and goes bankrupt. He fails to pay back his loan in time and the bank starts knocking on his doors for the loan repayment. Some recovery agents also come and pressurize him to pay the loan. Distraught with his life, he decides to commit suicide and communicates his plans to Melaram. Melaram becomes worried and informs other villagers about Mohan’s plans. The news spreads around the village and also finds a place in a newspaper. Reading this, the bank manager gets worried, as the onus of Mohan’s suicide would fall on the bank and the bank’s image would suffer. So, he decides to go to the village to convince Mohan not to take this drastic step. Since all these events take place in a jiffy, the bank manager could not even think of the way in which he would convince Mohan to change his mind. He reaches the village and takes the help of the villagers to pacify Mohan so that he changes his mind. The villagers give their ideas about the loan recovery methods which could ensure that people are not forced to take such drastic steps.
