#24. God's Word is Living, Active and Incisive!

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. We are considering how it is that the Word of God is useful for correction, and we reflected last time on the way it lights our path through the spiritual darkness of this world. The writer to the Hebrews brings another quality of the Word to our attention this week - it is no dead letter but is made a living and active Word as the Holy Spirit takes it and applies it to our situation. Now it is like a very sharp blade that is able to perform spiritual surgery with infinite precision - separating things that are impossible to divide in any other way. There are many views about what it means in the text to divide soul and spirit, but one that seems to fit the context is to separate between the spiritual activities of the old man and the new principle of life within the believer. Sometimes it is hard for us to know with what motives we desire to do certain things - whether they are pure and God-honoring, or whether they actually come straight from the flesh but are masquerading as pure and holy motives. And now here comes the Holy Spirit, wielding His sword, separating and dividing our thoughts and intentions and exposing what their origin and their tendency is. How we need the Word of God to help us see what is driving our desires and our actions in life, and by exposing those that are entirely fleshly, serving as a corrective and enabling us to repent and do things only to the glory of God! Once again, though, this blade will not do its work if we leave it in its scabbard - we have to take it out and let it do its work in us as we read it and hear it preached!
