Tim Baugus “Seventy Weeks and the Messiah” In order to understand the seventy weeks Daniel describes in the

book of Daniel, one must look at other important Old Testament books. God sent His prophets time and time again to tell the people of Israel to repent and turn back to Him. The Israelites would not heed the warnings of the prophets and thus God had no choice but to send the Israelites into captivity by their enemy the Babylonians. Daniel 7:24 states that “Seventy weeks have been decreed for your people and your holy city, to finish the transgression, to make an end of sin, to make atonement for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the most holy place.” What transgression is Daniel talking about?

Not giving the land its Sabbath rest was the transgression Daniel was describing in the book of Daniel. In Exodus 23:10 the Israelites were given clear instructions on how they were to work the land. “You shall sow your land for six years and gather in its yield, but on the seventh year you shall let it rest and lie fallow, so that the needy of your people may eat; and whatever they leave the beast of the field may eat.” The Israelites did not just break this commanded one or twice but they broke the commandment for seventy years. This is what Daniel is reminding his audience of in the book of Daniel. Since the Israelites would not obey God and give the land the rest He commanded, He intervened to give the land its rest. 2 Chron. 36:14-16 “They mocked the messengers of God, and despised His words, and misused His prophets, until the wrath of the Lord arose against His people until there was no remedy.”

plural. sin has the freedom to express itself in so many forms and fashion. Praise the Lord there's coming a day when that will not be the case. Not only to finish or to restrain firmly the transgression." Some think it means "to seal up. and will bring them against this land and against its inhabitants and against all these nations round about. Now there's a lot of debate about what the verb means--to make an end. behold. „and I will send to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. Not only will sin be dealt with in general. the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride. and I will utterly destroy them and make them a horror and a hissing. Three are negative. I will send and take all the families of the north. there's a seventy-week period of history. Number one to finish the transgression. Moreover. and an everlasting desolation." Every time the root word of "to seal up" is used. My servant. but to make an end of sins-. When we will no longer be at war with the spirit and the flesh.‟ declares the LORD. the seventy weeks are cut out of history for God to work with the Jewish people and their city for these six objectives. In the world in which we live today. Now that's an awesome thought. Some think it means "to end. Literally it means to restore restrain firmly the transgression. but sins in specific are to be dealt with as well. I will take from them the voice of joy and the voice of gladness. it speaks about divine judgment in the Bible.“Therefore thus says the LORD of hosts. The idea is that not only will God deal with sin as a totality. . There's coming a day when every time sin rears its ugly head it will be crushed with a rod of iron. „Because you have not obeyed My words. In other words.” (Jeremiah 25:8-11 NASB) First of all. the end of which God will wipe out sin. It always assumes the idea of judgment. but God will deal with specific sins as well. and these nations will serve the king of Babylon seventy years. and three are positive. The second purpose. the sound of the millstones and the light of the lamp. This whole land will be desolation and a horror. All evil will come under divine control by the Messiah.

but we had received from the cross the forgiveness of every specific sin as well.Finally. Daniel sees but doesn't see what the Spirit of God speaks of here. to cover sin. We not only had the general problem of a sin nature taken care of." Literally in the Hebrew it is "to atone for. even though the full application of that awaits His Second Coming. So we can see in those first three purposes of the seventy weeks a picture of the cross and its marvelous and amazing provision for sin. This is what he was crying out to the Lord in his prayer in the previous verses of chapter nine. All of our sins were dealt with and paid for on the cross. to make an end of sins and to make reconciliation for iniquity. Summing up these three: they all refer to getting rid of sin. Satan's head was bruised at the cross. when He's going to deal with sins in specific. What we see has to be the coming of Jesus Christ and His work on the cross. It was on the cross that sin in general was dealt with." It is the normal Hebrew word for atonement. The verb is kaphar. It was on the cross that atonement was made. and He's going to deal with it by bringing about an atonement for those sins. That was a welcome word for Daniel because it was sin that had brought Israel into captivity. To finish the transgression. There's coming a time when God is going to deal with sin in general. even though the final sentence has not been pronounced yet on him and awaits a future judgment after the culmination of this seventy-year period which the book of Daniel is describing. . sin has been dealt with there. it simply means "to cover iniquity. or to expiate. It was on the cross that sins in specific were dealt with as He bore them in His own body and shed His blood to appease the Fathers wrath. the third negative statement. So.

Righteousness takes permanent control. This is precisely what the Apostles were wanting when they said show us the time when the end shall be in the book of Mathew.. to bring in everlasting righteousness. Some believe that's speaking of the completing of the New Testament. The Jews never saw in the Old Testament the distinction between the first and second coming of Christ and the gap in between known as the church age. There will come an end to visions. The fifth one.. when it's finally established. This is the great mystery Paul speaks of in the New Testament. You do away with sin and exchange we receive everlasting righteousness. Because in His great glorious and eternal Kingdom.everything. it says He will seal up the vision and prophecy. all knowledge will be ours. What a great exchange. Then there are three positive purposes for the 70 weeks. That it's saying the New Testament canon will be finished? What the prophet is saying is there's coming a time when the Messiah will come and the Messiah will end sin and the Messiah will bring in the Kingdom of everlasting righteousness and there will be no need for us to be receiving little special revelations because everything will be disclosed to us. There will come an end to prophecies. In the Old Testament we have a prophecy that deals with the cross and is followed with teaching on the kingdom but no explanation of the church which is the gap that the Jews did not see coming. revelation will cease. we shall know as we are known. Number one. They were not looking for a gap to which we now can see is the church .

the fourth found in the book of Nehemiah seems to be the only decree that fits the rebuilding of Jerusalem and the math equation without twisting scripture and circumstances. with plaza and moat. a second one of his recorded in the book of Nehemiah. However. with plaza and moat.age. Once you look at all four decrees and see if they truly are talking about building Jerusalem and not just the temple. Daniel 7:25 holds the key to understanding when the clock started ticking. three of them are recorded in the book of Ezra: one by Cyrus. The second part of Daniel 7:25 states “until Messiah the Prince there will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks. He builds a magnificent incomparable millennial temple. They were ready to be delivered from the oppression of the Roman Empire and for Christ to set up His kingdom on earth right then and there. it will be built again. even in times of distress.” The decree to rebuild Jerusalem is the answer. There was a fourth one by Artaxerxes. it will be built again. and one by Artaxerxes. You have a prophecy here that stretches from Daniel's day to the time when the Messiah comes when He does away with sin and sins and He atones and He establishes a Kingdom of everlasting righteousness and He ends visions and prophecies. one by Darius. Daniel 7: 25 says “So you are to know and discern that from the issuing of a decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince there will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks. The big question then is when did the seventy-year decree begin? There have been many attempts at trying to explain when this time started. Summing it up. how many decrees were given to rebuild Jerusalem? There were four decrees given. even in times of .

Now Daniel 7:27 deals with the Anti-Christ making a deal with Israel in the last seven years known also as the great tribulation. and His name is called The Word of God. Then in a moment decreed by God the Anti-Christ will be allowed to come and make a peace treaty with Israel in which he will break after three and a half years of the seven years. What Daniel did not see was the church age. I Peter 1:11 “trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when he predicted the sufferings of the Messiah and the glories that would follow. so that with it He may strike down the nations.” .” God did not want us to know when the final seven years would be. 15 From His mouth comes a sharp sword. 14 And the armies which are in heaven. 13 He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood. the Israelites and anyone else living at that time whom did not get raptured before the beginning of the seven-year tribulation will suffer more than any human has suffered before. nor the Son. 16 And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written. and He will rule them with a rod of iron. “KING OF KINGS.
