High Nitrate 20-8-20
The Cal-Pot Special is a completely water soluble prilled mixture of calcium nitrate, potassium nitrate and micronutrients.
With over 90% of the nitrogen in the nitrate form and no urea,
Cal-Pot is very effective under low light conditions. With a relatively high potential basicity this formula can be used to raise
media pH. Prilled form improves product owability.

Pot Plant Special 15-15-30
The Pot Plant Special supplies twice as much potassium as nitrogen, while still maintaining the optimal levels of the other plant
nutrients. Over 58% of the nitrogen is in the nitrate form. It has a
very low potential acidity, exhibiting minimal acidifying tendencies
in the soil. It is recommended when soil levels or tissue samples
show low potassium levels or when plants are setting bud, as well
as during maturation and blooming.

Fertilizer accounts for 1% to 3% of the cost of producing a plant. Simple mistakes such as
miscalculation, placing a decimal in the wrong place or an error in weighing out nutrients
could cause the loss of an entire crop. Using low quality raw materials which are not
completely soluble will reduce the availability of nutrients and could clog injectors. If the
nutrient does not dissolve into solution, the plant cannot utilize it. You may think you are
applying 200ppm but because some of the nutrients are insoluble, you may actually be
applying much less. A premixed soluble fertilizer such as Plant-Prod is economical.
Plant-Prod is scientically blended with the highest quality materials. Chances for errors
are eliminated.

Conductivity
Total soluble salts is a measure, in the form of electrical conductivity, of the amount of fertilizer in solution.
Most nutrients or other elements that are soluble will contribute to the conductivity of the solution. The electrical conductivity (EC)
increases as the fertilizer concentration is increased.
Electrical conductivity is measured in mhos. The conductivity of fertilizer solutions is sufciently small that
it is measured in terms of millimhos (mmhos, one one-thousandth of a mho) or micromhos (mhos, one
one-millionth of a mho). Conductivity meters measure in either mmhos or mhos. Since most meters used by
our growers are calibrated in mmhos, the data given here on our fertilizers uses the same measurement.
The following table can be used to measure the accuracy of fertilizer injector systems by following these steps:
(1) Take a conductivity reading of clear irrigation water.
(2) Take a conductivity reading of nal fertilizer solution.
(3) Subtract the conductivity reading value of clear water from the conductivity reading of fertilizer solution.
(4) Compare the answer found in 3 to the corresponding value in the table in order to nd the concentration of fertilizer.
Example: Conductivity of clear irrigation water is 0.60 mmhos.
Conductivity of the nal fertilizer solution using 20-20-20 is 2.85 mmhos.
The conductivity due to the fertilizer is only 2.85 mmhos - 0.60 mmhos = 2.25 mmhos.
For 20-20-20, a conductivity reading of 2.25 mmhos corresponds to a feeding rate of 550 ppm of Nitrogen (N).
Note: The values on this chart were obtained under laboratory conditions using distilled water and a Plant Products conductivity meter.
The values obtained by the grower under eld conditions could therefore vary slightly (+/-10%) from the values listed here.

If you are mixing your own media, you know how difcult it can be
to get a small amount of an input mixed thoroughly into the entire
batch. It is even more difcult with a continuous system where
peatmoss, perlite, bark and other components are being mixed
and then limestone and other nutritional products are being fed
into the mix.

Effects of pH on Availability
The effect of pH on availability of plant nutrients
This chart shows the relative availabilities of most plant nutrients at various pH levels.
The width of each horizontal bar indicates maximum availability at the widest point and diminishing availability as the
bar narrows.
Applying nutrients in the proper balance is essential for proper plant nutrition, but maintaining the pH of the soil
mix so that these nutrients are available for uptake is just as crucial.
From these charts it can be seen that an optimum pH in soil mixes is around 6.5 - 7.5, whereas the optimum
for soilless mixes falls in the 5.5 6.5 range.
PPM Explanation
Often in designing fertilization programs, the term ppm appears. Simply, this means Part Per Million.
One ppm of a certain nutrient, such as nitrogen, means that the solution contains 1 part of nitrogen
in 1,000,000 parts of water by weight. There is an easy formula which can be used
to determine the ppm of a solution.
grams of fertilizer product x grade of fertilizer x 10 = ppm
litres of water in solution
It works like this: Plant-Prod 20-20-20 contains 20% N. To nd the ppm of nitrogen in a solution
containing 1g of Plant-Prod 20-20-20 in 100 litres of water, the equation is:
1 (g of product) x 20 (grade of fertilizer) x 10 = 2 ppm
100 (litres of water)
One gram of Plant-Prod 20-20-20 in 100 litres of water has 2 parts per million of nitrogen in the
solution. To determine the number of grams required to make up a 200 ppm solution of nitrogen with
Plant-Prod 20-20-20 fertilizer in 100 litres of solution, simply divide 200 by 2. Your answer is 100 g.

Nutricote is the worlds most consistent controlled release technology. Nutricotes coating is a unique and pliable resin that allows
for very predictable release rates. Based primarily on temperature, the release rate of a specic coating Type (i.e Type 180) is highly
predictable. For example at a constant temperature of 25C (77F), Type 180 coating will release 80% of its nitrogen evenly over a 180
day period. Warmer temperatures will shorten release times and cooler temperatures will lengthen the release times. Moisture, pH,
soil type or microbial activity do not signicantly affect Nutricote technology.
Nutricote Controlled Release Fertilizers are available in four analyses. Each analysis has a range of release periods designated by
Type.
Analyses available:

20-7-10
13-13-13 with micronutrients
18-6-8 with micronutrients
Release Types: Nutricote is available in seven different release types designated by the number of days required for 80% of nitrogen
to release at a constant soil temperature of 25C(77F)

If a slow-release fertilizer releases too much of its nutrient content in the early stages of a plants life, it defeats its own purpose
since most of it is leached away before it can be absorbed by the
roots. Also, high fertilizer salts will begin to build up in the root
area long before any visible signs of damage occur. This can
lead to suppression of growth, delayed maturity and lost prot
potential.

How it began
Just like an umbrella keeps you dry no matter what the weather,
ACER brand controlled release fertilizers help you produce
quality plants year in and year out. No two years are alike
nowadays, could be hot and dry, could be cool and wet, or maybe
growing conditions might be letter perfect. In any of these cases,
too much or too little nutrient at the wrong time can set you back.
Under the ACER umbrella your plant nutrition will stay consistent.
I needed a long lasting fertilizer that could kick in
early and shut down, if it had to. ACERnt does
exactly that.
Why ACER?
Acer means the best of both worlds. The rst blended product
line on the market that contains Nutricote controlled release
technology.
(All ACER blends containing Nutricote are designated as
ACERnt brand). There is an ACER product to suit most
applications incorporated or topdress, cool climates or warm,
one season or two season fertility. There is also an economical
ACER blend for any time you need an all purpose topdress
material.

Resistance Management
For Western Flower Thrips
There have been many reports throughout the region of thrips populations that are not being controlled by registered insecticides.
Resistance can be a major reason for pesticide failure. To slow down the development of resistance, IPM strategies including rotation
of chemical products, timely sprays, introduction of benecial insects and the use of other tools such as trap plants, sticky tape and
insect screening, are recommended. It should be noted, however, that when we talk about pesticide rotation and other pesticide
use strategies, there are actually very few effective products available. Additional strategies, such as biological control, become
important if not imperative. An increasing number of growers have made the move to biological control of thrips and are achieving
good results.
Monitor Weekly
Trap plants are useful either as a monitoring tool or as part of the thrips control strategy. Studies have shown that thrips can be more
strongly attracted to certain crops and varieties. Recent research supported by Flowers Canada has shown that chrysanthemum is
more attractive to thrips when compared to gerbera or eggplant (Shipp, et al., Final Report to Flowers Canada Ontario, May 2007).
The gure below shows the chrysanthemum variety Saskia planted as islands among other commercial chrysanthemum varieties.
The variety Saskia is very attractive to thrips in both the vegetative and owering stage. Research demonstrated that the use of
owering chrysanthemums as trap plants lowered the number of thrips in the vegetative stage of the crop and reduced thrips damage
(Shipp, et al).
Monitor trap plants weekly. Either release benecial mites on the trap plants to create a banker plant or replace the trap plants
weekly and use them strictly as trap plants. Banker plants have been used in the greenhouse to build up benecial insect populations.
Trap plants are particularly useful for trapping dispersing thrips, i.e. thrips on the move. Place trap plants close to intake vents, doors
and in thrips-problem areas.

If using parasitic wasps such as Aphidius spp or Encarsia, then hang blue roller tape. Blue roller tape will capture as many thrips as
the yellow roller tape, but will trap fewer benecial insects.
Screening vents. Although this method seems costly, growers who have installed screens
have observed a drastic reduction in insect pests.

37
The adoption of biological control of thrips is a long-term solution, which is a different approach to pest control than strictly using
chemical insecticides. We have become accustomed to a formula which has worked in the past: nd thrips, spray thrips, kill thrips.
Employing all tools of Integrated Pest Management is just that: management, not eradication. It is not a quick solution, but a long-term
one. Be vigilant in monitoring other pests such as aphids, loopers and spider mites. Release benecials for these pests as soon as
possible.

Chemical
Biological Control
Biological controls are becoming increasingly popular with growers of a wide range of crops. Safety issues are non-
existent and protective clothing is not required. There is no re-entry interval, no phytotoxicity and the chance of a pest developing
resistance to a biological control program is also non-existent.
Your staff and your customers will feel better about a product that is produced using a responsible and environmentally friendly
integrated pest management strategy.
Biological controls are best introduced before pest populations reach a problem level. Unlike chemical controls that will have an
immediate knockdown effect, biological controls are better used to prevent a pest infestation. Care also needs to be taken to ensure
that chemicals with long residual periods have not been used before bios are introduced.
Plant Products is determined that our customers will have access to the best biological controls available, along with technical sales
representatives and technical support staff that will help you choose the best plant protection products and strategies possible.
Our technical staff can help with crop specic or pest specic recommendations, and when you need to be a little more aggressive in
your integrated program we can help choose the products with the least impact to your biological controls.

This chart is not meant to be a comprehensive guide, check with local Ministries of Agriculture for recommendations and follow instructions on the

Not all products are registered for all crops. Please consult the label for the specic crop being grown.
Resistance Management:
When a pest or disease is exposed to a pest control product, some individuals in the problem
population are likely to survive and will pass on their genes to the next generation, resulting in an
increase in the tolerance or resistance of the population to later applications of the product.
In order to maximize and maintain the value of products it is important to follow the Resistance
Management recommendations that are found on product labels. In general no more than 1 or 2
applications of the same product should be made before switching to one from a different family.
For fungicides it is important to use multi-site products in rotation rather than relying on single site
mode of action products. Do not exceed or reduce the recommended rate nor exceed the number of
applications allowed per crop cycle.

Stim-Root
Stim-Root
The successful Hormone formula that stimulates
rapid rooting of cuttings.
Stim-Root is Plant Products proprietary rooting hormone. Used
and trusted by generations of growers, Stim-Root has been
relied upon to help cuttings establish quickly.
Indole-3-butyric acid or IBA, is the active ingredient that
encourages the cutting to develop roots when it otherwise
would not. Plant Products offers Stim-Root as a powder in 3
different concentrations, and as a liquid solution in 3 different
concentrations. Simply dip the lower of the cutting, tap to
remove excess powder or liquid and stick the cutting.
Stim-Root #1
0.1%IBA is ideal for softwood cuttings and easy to propagate
plants.
