The Undying Insurgency in the Philippines

With the continuous development in our world, change can be drastic. Only
a few can go by the flow of this changes which inflicts a complication in the harmony
of everyone. The emergence of insurgency is very common for the people in third
world countries for they are hungry for justice and equality. Insurgency, by definition,
is a form of revolt or rebellion against the government. The principal or root causes
for this kind of action are invariably to be found in socio-economic, political or
religious domains; the nature and scope may depend upon the nature of the
demands, grievances and motivations of the people.

In the Philippines, insurgency has been a formidable threat in the country for
the past three (3) decades and five (5) Philippine Presidents. The most prominent
rebel group in the Philippines is the CPP-NPA-NDF and has been considered as the
world’s largest Communist insurgency. It is a communist group whose main objective
is to establish or build a new democratic state in the Philippines. They envision a
state led by the working class and to expel or withdraw from the influence of the
United States of America.

The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), New People’s Army (NPA) and
National Democratic Font (NDF) have a reputation of being involved in extortion
activities and violence, targeting innocent people and industries, which can be
considered as terrorism. The government pursued great efforts to give what this
group want in order to avoid further complications or harm especially to the innocent
civilians. In the recorded attacks, the CPP-NPA-NDF group may be considered
belligerent under the International Humanitarian law. One specific example was the
October 3, 2011 attack on the three mining companies in Surigao del Norte, where
they took four (4) hostages, and it was due to the unpaid so-called revolutionary
taxes to the group.

One of the implication of negotiations or peace talks conducted by the

government is the chance of the CPP-NPA-NDF group to recruit new members. They
use it on their advantage to strengthen their fight against the government instead of
enlightening them or listening to the government.

Communism, Activism and Political Economy, these three parts was

basically related to each other’s practices. Why? We basically just look to their
compound meaning, communism is a way of organizing a society in which the
government owns the things that are used to make and transport products including
land, oil and other that does not own by any private individuals. Activism have the
same idea in which tackles to a practice or doctrine that emphasizes vigorous direct
action specially in support of or opposition to one side of a controversial issue. It’s
like forcing community to replace private property to furthermore public ownership
and communal control and use them for production of Natural resources. Political
Economy a study of the role of public policy for the influence of the economic and
social welfare of a political unit.

To reduce the fight between Philippine Government and the groups of CPP-
NPA-NDF the government should arrange bilateral talks by means of peace and
pursuing productive rules and to know their sides as also to re-organize those
coalition for not doing such destructive and more violent way of having their rights.
And to prevent further recruitment the government must give proper education to
the people within the NPA Resides for them to be informed what was right. And also
our government should Improve the social awareness for the Filipino citizen, so that
the people will have a better understanding about NPA.

New People Army’s see themselves as protector of the powerless and voiceless
in a society that favors the rich. The government should hear out the NPA’s demand
if it’s doable or not and also strengthen the policy to attain guns especially for the
public that compromise to avoid future effect on attaining arms.

We should eradicate this problem right away as it is one of the hindrances of

the Philippine development and make new agreements to settle difficulties with
the New People’s Army. As this problem continues to thrive the growth of our
nation will be affected and we are losing as a society.
