CHE 320: Chemical Engineering Process Analysis II
(Section: Energy Balances on Reactive Processes)
Monday, February 26, 2018
Assignment I

Instructions: Answer all questions and show all workings. You are expected to source any
needed data like heat capacity equations, heats of formation, etc from Perry’s chemical
engineering handbook, Felder and Rousseau or any other reference text.

Due date: Friday, 2nd March, 2018 on or before 5 pm.

1. The combination of coke and steam produces a mixture called coal gas, which can be used as a
fuel or as a starting material for other reactions. If we assume coke can be represented by graphite,
the equation for the production of coal gas is

2 C (s)  2 H2O (g)  CH4 (g)  CO2(g)

Using Hess' law, determine the standard enthalpy change for this reaction from the following
standard enthalpies of reaction :
(1) C(s)  H2O (g)  CO (g)  H2 (g) H  131.3 kJ/mol
(2) CO (g)  H2O (g)  CO2 (g)  H2 (g) H  - 41.2 kJ/mol
(3) CH4 (g)  H2O (g)  3 H2 (g)  CO (g) H  206.1kJ/mol

2. One reaction involved in the conversion of iron ore to the metal is

FeO (s)  CO (g)  Fe (s)  CO2 (g)

Calculate, using Hess' law, the standard enthalpy change for this reaction from these reactions
of iron oxides with CO :
(1) 3 Fe2O3 (s)  CO (g)  2 Fe3O4 (s)  CO2 (g) H  - 47.0 kJ/mol
(2) Fe2O3 (s)  3 CO (g)  2 Fe (s)  3 CO2 (g) H  - 25.0 kJ/mol
(3) Fe3O4 (s)  CO (g)  3 FeO (s)  CO2 (g) H  19.0 kJ/mol

3. The following enthalpy changes are known for reactions at 25oC and 1 atm:
No. 𝒐
𝒌𝑱
∆𝑯 ( )
𝒈𝒎𝒐𝒍
1 C3H6(g) + H2(g) C3H8(g) -123
2 C3H8(g) + 5O2(g) 3CO2(g) + -2220
4H2O(l)
3 H2(g) + 1/2O2(g) H2O(l) -285.8
4 H2O(l) H2O(g) 43.9
5 C (diamond) + O2(g) CO2 (g) -395.4
6 C (graphite) + O2(g) CO2(g) -393.5

Calculate the standard heat of formation of propylene (C3H6).

4. Sulphur dioxide is oxidized to sulfur trioxide with 100% excess air. The feeds to the reactor (air
and SO2) are at 450oC and the fractional conversion is 0.65. The production rate of the process is
100 kg/min SO3 and the products leave the reactor at 550oC. The reactor is surrounded by a cooling
jacket; calculate the heat that must be transferred from the reactor to the cooling jacket (kW).
Note: Write the balanced chemical equation per 1 mole of SO3.
