Right Action at Right Time: U N Dandekar (Integrity)

I was posted at a very remote tribal rural branch at Bamnoli, Dist :Satara.

The Bamnoli is at back waters of Koyna Dam surrounded by trench of Sahyadri

Mountain. The area is of Koyna is full of forest. It is about 25 kms away from Satara
Distt.

During monsoon, ferry boat service was the only service available for villagers on the
other side of the back water of Koyna. Villagers remain totally isolated from rest of
world due to heavy monsoon, no motorable roads only thick forests. These villages
were under service area of our branch.

Before starting of monsoon, all natives had to buy and store grocery, food grains etc.
for entire rainy season. Fortunately, with their due efforts horticulture department
could release the subsidy to be distributed through our branch.

That was the last day of ferry to their villages before ensuing monsoon. They requested
and prayed us to release the subsidy so that they could purchase grocery, food grains
and all for monsoon and caught last ferry back to their places otherwise they had to
remain half fed all through the monsoon times.

Looking to the gravity of the situation, I motivated my branch staff to look to make
payment of subsidy. I myself prepared check list of beneficiaries of horticulture
subsidy, mapped their linked Savings account number as well as loan accounts
simultaneously. I asked all the aspirants (about 50 to 60 in number were present there)
to make out minimum amount they need to take care of their post monsoon
requirements and made them understood about loan overdue. We convinced them
to repay overdue in loan accounts so that accounts are not degraded. They were very
happy on the options we put up before them.

Since, branch had only one cashier-cum-clerk and one peon, looking to the paucity of
time, without delaying anymore; we first started crediting subsidy amount in
respective saving accounts. We prepared request letter and obtain their consent with
authority to withdraw for loan recovery, and prepared a list of overdue amount for
recovery.

Thereafter, after discussing with them individually, we noted down the minimum
amount they wish to withdraw for purchasing grocery etc. By obtaining their consent
and authority we prepared a list. First, we transferred overdue loan amount and then
made payment allowing withdrawal from SB account.

Since the subsidy report was received very late after business hours and it was last day
for boat service, all the villagers were very happy to see our positive approach in
helping them and agreed to respect their minimum requirement.

Before leaving the branch, they all collectively came to me and their Sarpanch offered
a cash reward of Rs.1000/- for our extending timely help and for getting their
legitimate amount. I was just shocked as it was first incidence in my life when any of
the customers offered cash for services rendered by us. I scolded him and explained
that Bank never take any such reward for service. Instead we offered a cup of tea to
all of them.

All our staff members were very glad on seeing the pleasure and satisfaction on their
face. I thanked God that by just a little favour and spending a little extra time, we could
help the poor, needy and helpless villagers.

Bank of Baroda has its foot prints on the people living at such remote places by
servicing to their cause.
