(The following is Anagarika Munindraji's letter to Sayagyi U Ba Khin after his first Vipassana course with Goenkaji. It
was published in the April 1972 issue of The Maha Bodhi journal.)
Kindly accept my profound regards and affectionate loving thoughts for you.
You will be glad to know that we had the opportunity to organize a ten-day Vipassana meditation course at the most
sacred place of Buddhagaya and it was started on the 19th of April. It was conducted by my Dhamma-mitta and Kalyana-
mitta Shri Satya Narayanji Goenka, who is one of your competent and devout disciples. The arrangement was made
without previous preparation and at short notice.
In this meditation-training seminar, 25 yogis took part, out of which 6 were monks of different nations. I myself took
advantage of participating in this seminar and have been greatly benefited by this Vipassana course. In such a short time,
the technique helped to open up the new dimension of understanding that it was surprising. The sincere and earnest
meditators having accumulated previous paramis could quickly see, feel and understand the characteristics and functions
of the rupakalapasin their body through the concentrated mind and penetrating insight. It is very strange to see the true
nature of the body-theanicca-state-the state of continuous flux of four elements, which is perceptible to the inner eye of
insight. I experienced sleepless nights with mind inward, observing anicca-the continuous change of my corporeal body.
Body became so sensitive and alive that some times with the very contact of objects of sense doors I felt and observed
the whole body like bubbles in the water appearing and disappearing when I was deeply aware and mindful.
During this ten-day course, my Dhamma-mitta Shri Goenkaji used to give a talk on Dhamma every evening to all the
yogis. All talks were on different aspects of Buddha Dhamma - related to the practice and true to the point and meaning
in accordance with the teaching. The talks were so inspiring, encouraging and ennobling that since my return from
Burma I had no opportunity to hear such good Dhamma-desana anywhere in India. I had no idea that my friend was so
well conversant with and such a good exponent of Dhamma in its true spirit both in theory and practice. I feel so happy
and fortunate myself that I took part in it.
During my long sojourn of about nine years in Burma from 1957 to 1966 for study and practice of Buddha-Dhamma, I
had the privilege to study the whole Tipitaka together with all their commentaries under competent and expert teachers; I
practiced meditation there under the guidance of noted teachers with most sincerity, earnestness and profound devotion. I
have derived rich benefit of it. It has changed my whole outlook and character. In later years, during my stay in Burma, I
took advantage of studying and practising different aspects of Satipatthana meditation in almost all the main
Kammaṭṭhana centres in Rangoon, such as Mingun, Sonlum, Ledi Yeitha, Hanthawady, Nanasagi etc. and I have been
greatly profited by all these practices and studies that gave me more knowledge on different aspects and approaches.
Though India is my birthplace (janma-bhumi), Burma is myDharma Bhumi-where Dharma was born in me. Everyone
everywhere was so kind to me, so hospitable and so generous-this I cannot forget. I always bear these happy and sweet
memories in me with deep gratitude and respect and give all my good wishes and mettā for the welfare, happiness and
progress of the people of Burma daily.
During my stay in Burma, I had several occasions to visit your meditation centre and I liked the place very much-the
environment was so calm and serene. I was very much inspired to stay there for some time and practise meditation under
your kind guidance. You had been always very kind and sweet to me. Due to certain reasons during those days I could
not get the opportunity to stay and practice there, and fulfil my intense desire. I understood your difficulty and
appreciated deeply your friendliness and affectionate loving kindness towards me.
My keen desire to be in your centre under your noble guidance has been fulfilled now at the hand of your true disciple.
The ten-day seminar was successfully completed on 19th April with great satisfaction. The result was beyond
expectation. We learned many things. All meditators were extremely happy to have spent these ten days in retreat. Since
my arrival in India I have dedicated my life for the cause of sasana and have been doing the sasana-work through practice
and talks on Dhamma.
This ten-day meditation course has added more knowledge that I value and treasure very much for my Dhamma-work.
This has been also a refresher course for me. All credit goes to you for everything and I am deeply grateful to you and
Shri Goenkaji for all this. Whatever merits I have acquired by observing Sila, practicing concentration and cultivating
insight, all I share with you. By virtue of these merits, may you live long with sound health and mind so that you may be
in a position to continue sasanawork for long and many more people may be benefited by you. May Dhamma the true
law reign forever for the happiness of all beings.

Q: It is found that students drop out after one or two courses. How can this trend be prevented?
SNG: This is because of the fact that every individual has both good qualities as well as bad qualities. People come to
Vipassana courses to strengthen their good qualities and to eradicate the bad ones. They get helped by Vipassana, in one
or two courses.
But after all, they have such a big stock of bad qualities. These start overpowering them. When these impurities start
overpowering a student, one understands fully well at the intellectual level that one should practise Vipassana to come
out of misery. Yet because one is overpowered by one’s own impurities, it becomes difficult. This is quite natural, we see
this everywhere.
This will continue to some extent. People will progress slowly—they may take two steps and then fall down, and get up
again; then again take two steps, and again fall down. Later they will reach the stage where they are so strong they can’t
fall down. It takes time.
As for the practical solution to the present problem there is one thing: even if a student stops meditating every morning
and evening, if they still come to a weekly group sitting, their battery will get charged and they will start working again.
So this weekly sitting is very beneficial in helping to solve this problem. In every town, every village, every
neighbourhood, there should be at least one person who can give time to remind people: “Tomorrow there is a weekly
joint sitting.” This will help people. Many of them do not come merely out of laziness. It is not that they are very busy or
that something stops them from coming. If you simply encourage them, they will come.
Another thing we have found helpful is these one-day courses with Anapana, Vipassana, metta, and a short discourse. The
students get refreshed by such courses, their batteries gets charged. This should be encouraged. It will be helpful.

A businessman said that in business one has to speak half-truths, and sometimes, outright lies.
Goenkaji replied, "It is our greed that makes us believe that one cannot be totally honest in business. If one practises
Vipassana, one realizes within that honesty is really the best policy. And as one becomes an honest businessman, the
word spreads around and one gets more business.
http://www.vridhamma.org/en2002-06
Greed is the root cause of all business malpractices and greed comes from lack of awareness of the truth within.
One journalist was keen to know why Goenkaji had a strict policy of not charging for his courses though it would provide
financial resources to spread Vipassana far more extensively. Goenkaji said that it seemed to be a good justification to
charge money but any such step is bound to harm the Dhamma. When money is involved, profit becomes the most
important motive sooner or later and one starts making compromises to please the "customers".

Que : In my daily sitting of one hour, I devote at least thirty minutes to Anapana. Is it all right?
Whenever you find your mind is very agitated, make use of Anapana.
Maybe thirty or forty minutes, maybe for the whole hour you carry on with Anapana, and the next sitting will be
much better.
So Anapana is to stabilise your mind, to make it quiet and more sensitive to feel the sensations.

Q: You say we are meditating (during Anapana) to sharpen the mind. How is the mind sharpened?
A: If you are with reality and not reacting to it, naturally the mind gets sharpened.
The mind gets blunt when it reacts.
When you don't react, its natural reality is very sharp, very sensitive.

governed by Dhamma?
You can do anything you wish, but if you react, Dhamma will bind you.
SNG: In every way! Whatever experience you gain, you have to be equanimous. At times it happens that you feel the
whole body, the totality of it. Then you won’t have to even move up or down, you feel the entire body, sensations in the
whole body. You can stay like this for two, three or five minutes and then after that again start moving.
You can’t stay like this for very long time because then you will be missing certain parts.
For two, three or five minutes you can have the totality of the body and still you are equanimous. Then you start moving
and you are equanimous. With every experience, equanimous.
Q: I was going to ask you if I should just practice Anapana to get that experience, to get that totality?
SNG: No, Anapana should be practiced only whenever you find that your mind is getting agitated or the mind is getting
very dull, very sluggish—not to get a particular type of experience.
Whatever experience you got last moment, you may not get now, you may not get for days together.
If you start craving for it, then you are not doing Vipassana.
Whatever experience comes on the way, you accept it, you remain equanimous. If it has gone, it has gone.
SNG: Yes. If the gross sensation is trying to overpower you and you can’t remain equanimous, then for some time you
can work on Anapana—nothing wrong.

A: Whenever something happens in the external world that we do not like, there are unpleasant sensations in the body.
A Vipassana meditator focuses the entire attention on these sensations without reacting, just observing them very
objectively.
It is very difficult in the beginning, but slowly it becomes easier to observe the gross unpleasant sensations - what we call
pain - with a balanced, calm mind.
You take all important steps to cure your injury or illness; you go to the doctor or hospital.
But at the same time your mind is equanimous because you are with the sensation.

[8/22, 7:16 AM] +91 88881 19889: A Meditator’s Near-Death Experience
Dr. Umesh Perera, who practices general medicine in Australia, learned Vipassana in Sri Lanka in 2003. After suffering a
heart attack at the age of 43, he recorded his experiences.
That day, I had an early morning house call. During it, I felt symptoms of indigestion. I ignored them but they persisted.
After the call, I started to drive home but the discomfort worsened and became chest pain, radiating into my left arm and
jaw. I was sweating profusely and felt shortness of breath.
I managed to reach my home, entered and sat down. I took off my sweat-drenched jacket and told my wife what was
happening. I opened my emergency bag, took an aspirin and used a spray medication. I then called emergency services
and said I thought I was having a heart attack.
The ambulance arrived very quickly, and the team began attending to me. I felt as if an elephant was sitting on my chest.
Still, I was fully alert and conscious. Without deciding to do it, I found that I was practicing Vipassana. Part of my mind
was observing sensations and not reacting to them. I was in a lot of pain but at the same time there was no pain at all. I
felt peaceful and content. There was not a trace of worry in my mind, no anxiety or fear. Instead, I felt relaxed and
peaceful.
My wife was sitting beside me, our cat was licking me, and I thought, “This is the end. At last I’m free.” It felt so good
that everything was over. There would be no more worries now. I let go of everything. I will never forget the sense of
pure, unlimited freedom, of peace and tranquility. I felt pure and undefiled.
Somehow, the entire situation seemed familiar to me, as if I had experienced it many times before.
I realized that I could not take anything or anybody with me—not my wife, my son or parents, nothing that I owned. Just
myself. No, not even myself—nothing. Instead of sadness or worry, I felt at peace. I felt spiritual.
The attendant confirmed that I was having a heart attack. I think I said, “That’s okay,” and smiled.
I also laughed. Honestly, I hadn’t felt better in a very long time. Later, I longed for the peace that I felt then.
The attendants put me in the ambulance. Now I was practicing Vipassana lying down, observing my sensations arising
and passing. I thought, “Anicca, anicca. Everything is impermanent.”
I was taken to the hospital cardiac catheterization lab. It was a short journey but felt long.
Three or four people clustered around me, attaching leads to my chest, inserting small tubes in my forearms, removing
my clothing, prepping me for surgery, connecting me to a monitor. The oxygen mask made it difficult for me to talk. But
I was smiling because I felt good.
The cardiologist explained that he was going to insert a stent to open a blocked coronary artery. As he performed the
procedure, the pain at first worsened. Once the blood was able to flow through the artery, the pain went away.
After the surgery, I had to spend four hours immobile in the recovery room. This was fine with me because I could
practice Vipassana. While the nurse took care of me, I remember that I told her about meditation and what life is from a
spiritual viewpoint.
Six months later, I feel that this experience opened me up to reality. There was a strong chance I could have died. At the
moment of death, you don’t have many choices. All you can control is how you react to the present moment.
Life has changed for me. What once seemed important has become unimportant, and what I never cared about has
become the center of my life. Through Vipassana, I learned real equanimity. I learned this and so much more.

2)
You are born as a human being when vipassana is available
3)
You already have sat a vipassana course
4)
You do have faith in vipassana
5)
You are continuing the practice
This means you already have all the five rare things with you!
In hard times vipassana is the solace. Never miss daily sittings and it'll work miracles.
Even while in the midst of tough situation you can be aware of sensation anywhere on your body; if not sensation, one or
two breaths!
Going to bed daily, lie down, relax, close eyes and start observing sensations randomly, not in particular order
---
And in the morning as soon as your sleep is broken, don't jump out of your bed; simply catch hold of sensation anywhere
on the body and then start your morning routine
---
Both these will take hardly 5 minutes. This will help your subconscious mind get stronger to fight out tough situations!
(This is extra meditation apart from daily sittings)

The site contains Afghanistan's largest copper deposit, as well as the remains of an ancient settlement with over 400
Buddha statues, stupas and a 40 ha (100 acres) monastery complex.
It is also considered a major transit route for insurgents coming from Pakistan.
Archaeologists are only beginning to find remnants of an older 5,000-year-old Bronze Age site beneath the Buddhist

A: Well, certainly our past actions will give fruit, good or bad.
They will determine the type of life we have, the general situation in which we find ourselves.
But that does not mean that whatever happens to us is predestined, ordained by our past actions, and that nothing else can
happen. That is not the case.
Our past actions influence the flow of our life, directing them towards pleasant or unpleasant experiences.
Nature has given us the ability to become masters of our present actions.

Que: In my daily sitting of one hour, I devote at least thirty minutes to Anapana.

When you don't react, its natural reality is very sharp, very sensitive.
