California is currently leading the nation in environmental literacy as a result of the Education and the Environment Initiative (EEI). The EEI Curriculum teaches select academic content standards to mastery within the context of the environment, and makes learning both engaging and relevant. EEI is a unique opportunity to formally include environment-based education in California’s classrooms. This catalog includes a brief description of each of the EEI Curriculum units, and is organized by grade and subject. The EEI Curriculum is available to view or download at www.CaliforniaEEI.org. The California Education and the Environment Initiative is an ambitious landmark effort that is the result of AB (Pavley, Chapter , Statutes of ) and AB (Pavley, Chapter , Statutes of ). These laws mandated the development of the EEI Curriculum to bring education about the environment to California’s K– students. The California EEI Curriculum was approved by the State Board of Education in early . The California EEI Curriculum teaches select Science and History-Social Science standards to mastery while supporting English Language Arts standards. The EEI Curriculum will help students better understand how they influence the environment and how it influences them. This one-of-a-kind curriculum will help students be better informed when they make choices that affect their own health and the future of a healthy environment. The California Environmental Protection Agency (Cal/EPA), in partnership with its long-time partner, the California Department of Education, leads implementation of the EEI and is working today to bring this engaging curriculum to California classrooms.
