COOPER: Thank you, Mr. Chief Justice,9and may it please the Court:10 New York's highest court, in a case similar11to this one, remarked that until quite recently, it was12an accepted truth for almost everyone who ever lived in13any society in which marriage existed --14 CHIEF JUSTICE ROBERTS: Mr. Cooper, we have15jurisdictional and merits issues here. Maybe it'd be16best if you could begin with the standing issue.17 MR.
