Cal Poly Students’ Demands for Campus Diversity and Inclusivity
Underrepresented students at Cal Poly demand change. We are tired of the discrimination evidenced in acts such as the “Free Speech Wall”, the “Colonial Bros and Nava-hoes party”, the crops house incident, as well as the daily micro and macro aggressions that underrepresented students face on this campus. To address these issues, we have formed a student collective called SLO Solidarity. Our goal is to make Cal Poly a better place where equality for all students is realized, not just idealized. We are putting forth this list of demands to be delineated and acted on by those staff, faculty and administrators whose job it is to represent the students of Cal Poly. While it is imperative that students are highly involved in the process of implementing these demands, it should not fall on the shoulders of underrepresented students to do the jobs of our representatives and policy makers. Statement on Diversity
, which states:
At the heart of a university is the responsibility to provide its students with a well-rounded education, an education that fosters their intellectual, personal and social growth. For students preparing to embark upon work and life in the 21st century, a critical element of a well-rounded education is the ability to understand and to function effectively in a diverse and increasingly interdependent global society… [Diversity] cannot be a mere adjunct to such an education, but must be an integral element of the educational experience, infused throughout the community (faculty, students, and staff), the curriculum and the co-curricular programs of the University. We must be dedicated to the principle of ensuring that all of our students routinely encounter diverse people, ideas, and experiences... Only through intellectual and first-hand personal exposure to diversity in its myriad forms-- racial, ethnic, cultural, gender, geographic, socio-economic, etc.--will students gain the understanding, empathy and social skills that they will require to be effective, engaged citizens in an increasingly crowded and interrelated global community. The benefit of diversity is universal. Cal Poly’s commitment to diversity signals an affirmation of the highest educational goals of this University, including mutual respect, civility, and engaged learning.
In order for Cal Poly to live up to its Statement on Diversity, we the students ask the Cal Poly administration to meet our demands. These demands were formed by various working groups within SLO Solidarity and were written to address many of the negative experiences that students at Cal Poly continuously face. As previously discussed with President Armstrong and other administrators, we ask the administration to release an action plan by the start of Winter Quarter 2016 that details the steps our University leaders are taking to meet our demands and make Cal Poly a safe and equitable campus for all students. In order to help with this process we issue here our demands that we believe are not only necessary, but are achievable if Cal Poly leaders are truly invested in diversity and inclusion.
