Leopold et al. v. U.S. Department of Justice
, D.D.C. No. 14-2198 (JEB) Dear Mr. Light: This responds to your Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request on behalf of your clients Jason Leopold and Ryan Shapiro, dated and received in this Office on November 19, 2014, for records related to the dispute between the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence (SSCI) regarding the SSCI's review of the CIA's former Detention and Interrogation Program. This response is made on behalf of the Offices of the Attorney General (OAG) and Deputy Attorney General (ODAG). Please be advised that searches have been conducted in OAG and ODAG, as well as of the electronic database of the Departmental Executive Secretariat, which is the official records repository for those Offices. In addition, while processing your request, the National Security Division (NSD) referred material to this Office for processing and direct response to you. As a result of our searches and the referral from NSD, we have processed a total of 1,116 pages containing material responsive to your request. I have determined that 418 pages are appropriate for release, some with excisions made pursuant to Exemptions 5, 6, and 7(C) of the FOIA, 5 U.S.C. § 552(b)(5), (b)(6), (b)(7)(C). The responsive portions of the remaining 698 pages are being withheld in full pursuant to Exemptions 5, 6, and 7(C) of the FOIA. Exemption 5 pertains to certain inter- and intra-agency communications protected by the deliberative process and attorney work-product privileges. Exemption 6 pertains to information the release of which would constitute a clearly unwarranted invasion of the personal privacy of third parties. Exemption 7(C) pertains to records or information compiled for law enforcement purposes, the release of which could reasonably be expected
to constitute an unwarranted invasion of the personal privacy of third parties. Please note that portions of the documents which are not responsive to your request, in that they pertain to topics unrelated to the subject of your request, have not been processed.
