Saludos,
WE RISE!
In the face of an unprecedented onslaught against our values as a nation LatinoJustice PRLDEF has risen to the challenge. With the support of individuals like you, we defended the rights of hundreds of thousands of Latinxs in 2018.
When
:
Workers in Long Island and in New York’s Hudson Valley were denied
their wages, we
secured
the funds to make them whole;
Roxana Orellana Santos, the Latina immigrant we represented in federal court to challenge the racial profiling that resulted in her detention in Maryland, faced another ICE check-in we accompanied her to press that her
litigation
matters to the struggle for civil rights;
The current administration created a federal commission to investigate so-called voter fraud by millions of non-citizens, we joined our legal defense fund peers to successfully
challenge
its creation;
Latinx families of Bakersfield, California reached out to address the loss of their loved ones at the hands of police use of force, our Justice Reform Collaborative sprang to action and amassed hundreds of Latinx and allied activists, organizers and scholars to identify strategies to demand police
accountability
and policing
reform
;
Hurricane Maria exacerbated decades of U.S. neglect and discrimination against U.S. citizens in Puerto Rico, LatinoJustice PRLDEF
partnered
with attorneys and law professors on the island to support their critical work on disaster claim relief throughout Puerto Rico; trained volunteers on FEMA claims here in the U.S.; expanded legal assistance throughout Florida; sued FEMA to extend temporary shelter assistance; sued the government to access public records; and sued the state of Florida to extend bilingual voter assistance to displaced Puerto Ricans living in the state.
WE RISE!
Securing the values of our democracy, protecting workers, demanding sane and safe criminal justice policies, restoring the dignity of Latinx immigrant families, and helping Puerto Rico and its diaspora, all take time and commitment. It takes investment, the kind of investment we make every day
–
in people such as Latinx students pursuing a law school path and in communities, such as Gwinnett County, GA, where Puerto Ricans and other Latinxs are changing the civic landscape while battling harsh discrimination.
