Dear
Mt.
Lat'lon,
Our
It
has
been
a
great year
for
and
we
are
happy at
Spanish River.
We
are
writing
to
discuss the
Florida
Mandate
to
Include
Holocaust
Education
each
year
In
the
student's'
curriculum.
We
are .aware
that there
was
a
speaker
one
night
at
school
this
year,
and
that there
Is
a
Holocaust studies class offered, however,
these
offerings are attended
by
the
minority
of
students
and
are
optional.
We
would like
to
know
In
what ways/classes
is
Holocaust
education provided to
all
of
the
students? According
to
our
research,
it
is
Sllpposed
to
be
planned into
history
courses annually,
.and
to
date
my:
said
It
hasn't
been
mentioned
in
AP
Human
Geography.
Last year at
Omni
there
was
a
big
problem with
the
principal coveting
up
an
anti-Semitic incident,
which
led
to
the
discovery
that
he
was not ensuring
that
Holocaust education
was
being
Incorporated into
classes.
There was
a
Holocaust survivor
who
came
to
an
assembly attended by
some
classes, but
because
no
prior education
on
the Holocaust
was offered
In
preparation, the students did not appreciate
the Importance
nor
did
they
get
much
o.ut
of
It
because
they
were
not
paying
attention.
·
As
a
reault
of
the above mentioned
coming to
light,
a
group
of
us
contacted Palm Beach
County's Anti
Defamation
League
and
the
local
superintendents
and
meetings were arranged
to
address
the
issue
of
the
Holocaust
Education
Mandate
being
implemented at
Omni
and
how
to
address
anti-Semitic
Incidents
with
students
and
teachers.
In e1ddltlon,
student
assemblies were
arranged
to
try
to
make
up
for
some
of
the
lost
education,
as
well as training
for
staff.
·
Hopefully
this
is
not
an
issue
at
Spanish
River,
and there
Is
a
priority
placed
on
educating
all
students
on
the
Holocaust.
It
is
heartbreaking
that
In
this day
and
age
anti-Semitic incidents
are
heavily
on
the
rise
and more
people
than
ever
are not educated
on
the
horrors
of
the
Holociwst.
I
am
sure
that
you
can
appreciate
and
respect
our
concern.
Please understand that
our
Intention
of ensuring and
inquiring about
how
this
mandate is
being
followed through
on
Is
because
of
how the
ball was
dropped
regarding
i1
at Omni.
·
We
look forward
to
your
response, and
please
feel
free to
give
a
call
i·f
It
Is
easier
Thank
you
Sincerely,

I
response
to
your
email
and your
concerns
you
will
not
have
those
concerns
at
Spanish
River
in
regards
to
not
dealing
with
anti-
semitic
behaviors.
As
far
as
holocaust
studies
and
the
curriculum
it
can
be
dealt
with
in
a
variety
of
ways The
curriculum
is
to
be
introduced but not forced
upon
individuals
as
we
all
have
the
same
rights
but
not
all
the
same
beliefs.
Each
year
we
do
a
holocaust
assembly
and
we
target
the
lDth graders
so
every
year
that
group
will
get
a
days
work
with
the
holocaust.
We
advertise
it
to the
10th
grade
parents
as
their
are
some
who
do
not
want
their
children
to
participate
and
we
have
to
allow
them
the
ability
to decline.
By
doing
it
in
that
grade
level
every
students
will
get
the
opportunity
before they graduate
The
courses
are
offered
and
as
most
of
our
courses they are
optional
The
topic
is
covered
in the
va:r;ious
social
science
courses
that
it
aligns
with.
AP
Human
Geography and
any
other
AP
course
is
not
governed
by
the
Florida
Department
of
Education
as
far
as
content
because
they are college courses
owned
by
College
Board.
e
have
a
variety
of
activities
for
students
and
parents
each
year during
and
after
school
to
provide
anyone
the
ability
to
attend.
The
District s
Social
Science
and
Holocaust
Studies
Program
Planner
works
closely
with us
to
provide
opportunities
for the
Boca
Raton
community
as
we
have
been
the
school
they
work
through because
of
our
continued
focus
and
work
in
the
area
e
have
a
close
tie
with
Temple
Beth
El
and
use
Rabbi
Levin
as
my
consultant to
guide
me
in
the
area
and what
is
acceptable
and
not.
Again
we
do a
very
good
job
at
provi ding educa.tion
in
the
area
for
our
students
and
not accepting
certain
behaviors
or
not
addressing the
behaviors.
Thank you
