We’ll defend public services provided by public bodies - opposing privatisation and demanding accountability from companies the Council works with. We’ll support a programme of green jobs, investing in energy efficiency of homes, public buildings and energy generation. We’ll protect public assets - our local schools, parks, libraries and leisure facilities. We’ll use the council’s powers to back local businesses over giant supermarkets and chain-stores, breathing new life into neighbourhoods. We’ll give more power to communities, including community councils, parent councils and residents groups.
WHAT HAVE YOU ACHIEVED LOCALLY?
I have consistently opposed the Leith Biomass plant, and I co-wrote the Greener Leith objection to the plant. In 2007 I helped in the campaign against the Seafield Stink, and highlighted the need for investment to end the odour problem at the sewage works.I’ve been a volunteer and director of environment group Greener Leith since 2009 and helped run the successful “We love Leith” campaign in 2009-10.
WHAT ARE YOU DOING NOW?
I’m leading efforts to bring Scotland’s first community-owned urban wind turbine to Leith: a project which could deliver thousands of pounds of community investment to the area.I’m also active in the Splashback! campaign to save Leith Waterworld, and, together with Green Councillors, successfully delayed the sale of the building to allow a community bid to run the pool.I’m also a keen cyclist and a member of Spokes, the Lothian cycle campaign; a volunteer cycle path Ranger with Sustrans; and I’m a director of Edinburgh-based bike recycling project, the Bike Station.
WHAT WILL YOU DO ONCE ELECTED?
I will ensure the Council supports the re-opening of Leith Waterworld, either as a community-owned social enterprise or in some other form. We cannot allow this wonderful facility to be lost to Leith.I’ll support the creation of wind turbine construction jobs at Leith docks while ensuring that local people are fully consulted on any proposals.I will continue to oppose the Leith Biomass power plant.I’ll promote local shops and businesses in the face of increasing pressure from large retailers.I will protect and enhance the green and natural assets of Leith including Leith Links and the Water of Leith, and work to enhance and expand the network of cycling and walking routes around Leith.
