DHS and Secret Service: White House Contacts With Players in “Reading First”

A September 2006 report by the Office of the Inspector General of the Department of Education found violations of federal law and regulations in the administration of federal grants under a program called “Reading First,” a reading initiative created by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. Following up on that report and other facts uncovered in related news coverage, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) sent a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the Department of Homeland Security requesting Secret Service records indicating White House visits from 2001 to the present by 15 individuals associated with the Reading First program. The individuals include former Secretary of Education Roderick Paige, former Reading First director Chris Doherty, and former Reading First assistant directors Susan Neuman, Ray Simon, and Gene Hickock.
