CREW v. Department of Justice: Regarding Use of Email (2007)

On May 7, 2007, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) filed suit against the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) for failure to fulfill CREW's Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request for documents relating to the methods of communication used by the attorney general and deputy attorney general to communicate with the White House and other Executive Branch agencies, including their use of non-governmental email accounts. CREW sent a FOIA request on March 22, 2007. CREW received a letter from DOJ acknowledging receipt of the request and advising that the agency would not be able to comply within the 20 working day time limit.
