Earth Day: Reading about the natural world

“This planet has limits, and we must not abuse them,” says author Jean Craighead George. Through her children’s books, which often describe wildlife and the natural world, she hopes to inspire a deep respect for animals and the environment. In this, she’s carrying on a family tradition. Her parents and siblings were all avid naturalists and her father once worked with Silent Spring author Rachel Carson. Likewise, James Gleick, author of Chaos: Making a New Science, speaks to the need for humans to appreciate nature. “The wilderness has a beauty of its own. We don’t need to tame it—we need to rediscover it.” In honor of Earth Day, read authors whose appreciation for nature comes through on every page of their work.
