CREW: DOJ: Regarding Closed Investigation of Countrywide Financial Corp. and Angelo Mozilo: 4/30/14

On April 30, 2014, CREW filed FOIA requests with three components of the Department of Justice seeking records related to DOJ’s closed investigation of Countrywide Financial Corp. and its former Chief Executive Angelo Mozilo. Although Countrywide was one of the primary causes of the financial meltdown triggered by the housing collapse of 2008, through the huge numbers of subprime mortgages it provided, and although there was substantial evidence suggesting criminal misconduct, after an investigation DOJ declined to prosecute Mr. Mozilo. It is widely believed DOJ viewed Mr. Mozilo and Countrywide as “too big to prosecute.” CREW seeks to learn why DOJ declined prosecution.
