This course dealt with the application of ecological principles to the management and conservation of species and habitats that can take place at the local level via practical local conservation and biodiversity projects. This course explored the main ecological principles of biodiversity and extinction; communities and populations; stability, disturbance, and succession; nutrient cycling; interactions with the physical environment, etc. It demonstrated how ecosystems can be managed.
Mir came back to work from his early retirement from June 2008 to April 2010, as a Sustainability Analyst for Turner Lane Development Corporation, a real estate development company with the commitment to build sustainable communities. In this capacity, he assisted the company to develop and implement sustainable policies and procedures throughout their organization. Initially, he conducted extensive research primarily to build a corporate knowledgebase and published numerous articles and papers on the subject to share that knowledge with the community. He served on the local municipalities and other special interest organizations to represent the organization.
Mir has an impressive work history for over 40 years that includes working in the fields of sustainability, information technology, management consulting, and teaching. Mir holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science with emphasis on artificial intelligence, an MBA in Computer Science with emphasis on electronic banking, a Certificate in Computer Science, and a B.A. in Economics. He also holds a professional designation for Information Systems Professional (ISP) from the Canadian Information Processing Society (CIPS).
After serving the government, banking, and retail industries in various capacities for several years, Mir had founded a multi- million dollar consulting practice in 1986 with the objective to provide the information technology and management consulting services to the public and private sectors. A brief list of his clients includes: BC Ministry of Health Services, BC Industry Training Authority, Department of National Defence, Environment Canada, the Royal Canadian Police, Public Works Government Services Canada, Office of the Auditor General, CRTC, Transport Canada, Finance Canada, Canada Posts, PurchasePro, and Citicorp. Throughout his career, Mir empowered his clients to improve their operational proficiency, productivity, and profitability.
Mir took early retirement in 1997 and relocated to Henderson, Nevada, where he taught computer science courses at the University of Nevada and the Community College of Southern Nevada on a part time basis.
Mir relocated to Sidney, BC, in 2002. After conducting a project for BC Ministry of Health Services in 2005 and a project for BC Industry Training Authority in 2006, he accepted a full time job in 2008 in the capacity of a sustainability analyst with Turner Lane Development Corporation. He spent a great deal of time and energy in conducting research on the subject of sustainability with the focus on “Green Buildings”. He developed and implemented sustainability policies and procedures throughout the organization. He also published numerous articles and papers on various aspects of sustainability to share his knowledge with the global community in order to establish credibility in the field.
Working with the Colwood City Centre Project, one of Turner Lane’s mega projects, Mir explored the ways to build an intelligent city with the targets of zero-carbon, zero-waste, and zero-net-energy buildings. He investigated the ways to take advantage of the technologies like Smartcard and artificial intelligence to create an integrated intelligent network which will allow Smartcard to be used for monitoring security, processing financial transactions, and storing medical history. He also developed a prototype for marketing purposes to calculate how much GHG emissions can be minimized by each buyer by purchasing and moving into the sustainable buildings at the Colwood City Centre. This prototype takes into consideration the emissions being emitted based on the current life styles and compares it with the future life styles, reporting the difference.
Mir is focussed to assist his clients with the eco-efficiency, which is, achieved, through the delivery of competitively priced goods and services that satisfy their customers’ needs and bring quality of life while progressively reducing environmental impacts of goods and resource intensity throughout the entire life cycle of their goods and services. Eco-efficiency measures provide businesses a greater understanding of their processes, procedures, and impacts as eco-efficiency requires the development of organizational, financial, and environmental profiles. The concept of these services is based on the assumption that the reduction in ecological impacts will translate into an increase in resource productivity, which in turn will create a competitive advantage. This is accomplished by: Reducing the material intensity of goods or services; Reducing the energy intensity of goods or services; Reducing the dispersion of toxic materials; Improving recyclability; Maximizing the use of renewable resources; Enhancing the durability of products; and increasing service intensity of goods and services.view less
