Virtual Private Networks (VPN) Basic Architecture 4 .

The link-layer protocols of the virtual network are said to be tunneled through the larger network. 5 .WHAT IS VPN ? A virtual private network (VPN) is a computer network in which some of the links between nodes are carried by open connections or virtual circuits in some larger network (e.g.. the Internet) as opposed to running across a single private network.

What a VPN needs ?  VPNs must be encrypted  VPNs must be authenticated  No one outside the VPN can alter the VPN  All parties to the VPN must agree on the security properties o so no one can read it 6 .

VPN means :“I don’t care how you connect” 7 .

 Scalability 8 .  The Internet is used as the backbone for VPNs  Saves cost tremendously from reduction of equipment and maintenance costs.Private Networks vs. Virtual Private Networks  Employees can access the network (Intranet) from remote locations.  Secured networks.

–With in organization Extranet VPN. VPDN-virtual private dial-up network. VPRN-virtual private routed network. – Employee to Business VLL-Virtual leased lines.–Outside organization Remote access VPN. 9 . VPLS-virtual private LAN segments.TYPES OF VPN Intranet VPN.

 VPN as your Intranet… 10 .

 SITE-TO-SITE VPN CONNECTIONS OVER THE INTERNET… 11 .

 REMOTE ACCESS VPN CONNECTIONS OVER AN intranet… 12 .

Device Types What it means 3 types – Hardware – Firewall – Software 13 .

Four Protocols used in VPN PPTP -.Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol IPsec -.Internet Protocol Security SOCKS –It is not used as much as the ones above 14 .Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol L2TP -.

 PPTP: Free from Microsoft 15 .

Link Layer: L2TP for VPDN (Vir Pvt Dial Net) 16 .

IPSEC Key Exchange (IKE) 17 .

ADVANTAGES OF VPN Cost saving… Scalability AND Flexibility… Improve Security… Reduce Transit Time For Remote Users… Operational costs…  Extend Geographic Connectivity… 18 .

DISADVANTAGES OF VPN Immature standards… VPNs require an in-depth understanding of public network security issues and proper deployment of precautions…  VPNs need to accommodate protocols other than IP and existing internal network technology… Availability and performance depends on factors largely outside of their control 19 .

Industries That May Use a VPN  Healthcare: Enables the transferring of confidential patient information within the medical facilities & health care provider  Manufacturing: Allow suppliers to view inventory & allow clients to purchase online safely  Retail: Able to securely transfer sales data or customer info between stores & the headquarters Enables account information transferred safely within departments & branches  Banking/Financial: to be  General Business: Communication between remote employees can be securely exchanged 20 .

FUTURE ASPECT  SECURITY  HIGH AVAILABILITY  SCALABILITY  QOS ( QUALITY OF SERVICE ) 21 .

secure and cost-effective communication infrastructure.CONCLUSION • From this we can conclude that VPN provides a very safe . 22 .
