How to form Present Continuous Tense


Subject + am/is/are + Ving + Object

I am trying to solve this problem. We are playing for our nation. You are getting late. You are lying. He is practicing a lot. She is cleaning her room. It is working well. They are making noise in the class. Sachin is trying his best to complete this project.

For an action going on at the time of speaking i.e. for an action happening now; as,

I am doing my job sincerely. We are trying to save trees. You are making mistake. You are learning English Tenses. He is waiting for our Principal. She is making a tea for the guests. It is raining. They are listening Marathi songs. Raina is playing very well. The boys are enjoying the picnic. Smita and Geeta are studying together.

For a temporary action which may not be actually happening at the time of speaking; as,
I am reading a novel by Thomas Hardy. We are doing diploma in Computer Engineering. He is teaching English and learning French. Lasith Malinga is playing cricket for Sri Lanka.

To express ones immediate plans or definite arrangements in the near future; as,

I am meeting my friend tonight. He is taking me to the theatre.


He is going to support Baba Ramdev.

we are coming on Monday to Solapur.


This bus is leaving to Nashik at 9 a.m. Shobha De is writing her next novel in December. They are celebrating Independence Day.

Past Continuous Tense


How to form Past Continuous Tense
Subject + was/were + Ving + Object
I was trying to solve this problem. We were playing for our nation. You were getting late. You were lying. He was practicing a lot. She was cleaning her room. It was working well. They were making noise in the class. Sachin was trying his best to complete this project.

It is used to denote an action which was going on at some time in the past. The time of the action may or may not be indicated. I was attending lectures at 2.30 a.m. We were listening to the radio all evening. You were speaking with your neighbour.

He was planning to deceive me.


She was trying to make fun of me. It was getting darker.

They were discussing English Tenses.


Yogesh was talking on the phone.

It is also used with always, continually, etc. for persistent habits in the past.

He was always complaining. She was always ringing me up.

They were always working.


We were always taking his advice.

Future Continuous Tense


How to form Future Continuous Tense Subject + was/were + Ving + Object
I will be trying to solve this problem. We will be playing for our nation. You will be getting late. You will be enjoying this book. He will be practicing a lot. She will be cleaning her room. It will be working well. They will be making noise in the class. Sachin will be trying his best to complete this project.

It is used to talk about actions which will be in progress at a time in the future.
I will be watching the tennis match on TV at 5oclock. This time tomorrow I will be travelling to Pune.
We will be speaking English fluently soon.

You will be ruling the world. She will be sewing sweater for her mother. My brother will be going to Spoken English classes at 6 p.m. They will be going to Mahabaleshwar by bus . Sharad will be helping that old man.

It is also used to talk about actions in the future which are already planned.

She will be staying here till Sunday. He will be meeting us next week. The postman will be coming soon. The film Ek Tha Tiger will be releasing on 15th August.
