Lecture 1

The first and most widely used drafting software in the world…  CAD: Computer-Aided Design  CADD: Computer-Aided Design and Drafting  CAM: Computer-Aided Manufacturing

 CIM: Computer-Integrated Manufacturing

AutoCAD Systems Offer:
• Increased accuracy

Increased drawing speed
Easy to revise

Better design analysis
Better presentation

Libraries of drawing aids
Improved filing

Start a new drawing • • • • Click on AutoCAD shortcut By default it will open a new drawing Click open to previously saved file The screen should look like the next slide .

Osnap. Model) . LWT.• Draw toolbar: • Modify toolbar: • Model. Ortho. Otrack. Layout2: allow to switch among drawing and different layout for printing • Command prompt area: basic ways of working in AutoCAD is by typing commands • Status bar: display coordinates and eight mode indicators (Snap. Polar. Layout1. Grid.

and used for point selection. menu selection etc. object selection. also calls up the shortcut menus like other windows program • The small cross in the display area is called cross-hair and tells the location of the pointing device • Small box at the cross-hair is called pickbox and used to select objects for editing . • Right button is an alternative to Enter key.The Mouse • Left button of the mouse is called the pickbutton.

To change the background color… • • • • • • Right click on screen Select Options Go to Display tab Click on Colors Change color Apply and close .

Three ways to communicate with AutoCAD • Toolbar • Pull down menu • From the command line .

Object Properties. Modify toolbars open by default Pull-Down Menus • Same as any other windows program . Draw.Toolbars • It gives one-click access to command • Twenty-four toolbars can be opened from Toolbar dialog box • Standard.

Command Line • Type commands and then press Enter • Esc (escape) key is used to cancel a command and also to bring back the command prompt • Most of the common commands have one or two letter abbreviations – – – – – – – Arc Circle Erase Line Move Redraw Zoom A C E L M R Z Distance Fillet Layer Linetype Rotate Insert DI F LA LT RO I .

it opens object selection box. look at the command area – Specify opposite corner: • Pick a second point. y is vertical.Coordinate display • Keeps track of coordinates as the pointer moves (x is horizontal. This will complete the object selection • Turn off by pressing F6 . z is 0) • Controlled by the F6 key or by clicking on the display itself • Press F6 and see what happens • Move cross-hair to a point and press the left button of the mouse • Move cross-hair to another point.

type A for ALL • To modify Grid and Snap settings: Right click on Grid tab Select settings Enter new Grid settings in “Grid X spacing” Enter new Snap settings in “Snap X spacing” Hit OK . type Z and press Enter (zooming). the GRID button is „down‟ • At the command.Grid • Press the key F7 or click on the word GRID on status bar – It will turn on grids.

• The full scale drawing space is called „model space‟. MODEL button is „down‟ • No need to scale the drawing while you are working on it • The actual size of drawing printed out on paper can be handled in „paper space‟ • In „paper space‟ you will see the word PAPER instead of MODEL .

the SNAP button is „down‟ • Move the cross-hair. it jumps from one grid point to another • Turn off Snap by pressing F9 or clicking SNAP button .Snap • Press the key F9 or click the word SNAP.

90. 180. 270 degrees of rotation from the starting point • Polar: – Controlled by F10 key or POLAR button – Tracks points in polar coordinate .• Ortho: – controlled by F8 key or ORTHO button on status bar – It forces the pointing device to pick up points only along horizontal and vertical quadrant lines – Can only select points at 0.

To turn off the user coordinate system icon: Type ucsicon Then type off To modify global linetype scale factor: Type ltscale in command line Type in new linetype scale factor .

Coordinate system icon • Type “ucsicon” in command line and press Enter • The following prompt will appear Enter an option[ON/OFF/ALL/Noorigin/Origin]: • Type “off” and press Enter – UCS (user coordinate system) will disappear • Type “ucsicon” and “on” again OR click menu/View/Display/Ucsicon/On to see it again .

Helpful Hints … • To get the Command Line back… – Type Control 9 • To get your toolbars back… – Go to Tools/Workspaces/Customize/AutoCAD Classic Default/Customize Workspace/ click on the Toolbars icon on left/ check the toolbars you want/Apply .

GRID and MODEL are in on („down‟) position • Type “L” and Enter OR select Line icon from Draw Toolbar OR select menu/Draw/Line. Command line will show – Specify next point or [Undo]: • Pick the second point and press pickbutton.Drawing Lines • Be sure that SNAP. • Press the space bar or Enter to end the LINE command . Command line will show – Specify first point: • Pick a point and press the pickbutton.

Direct Distance Entry • After picking the first point you can also show the direction of line segment and length of the line. you can type any number • Press Enter or Space bar • Press Enter or space bar again to exit the LINE command . • Pick the first point like before • Pull the rubber band toward the direction you want and type “3” – 3 is the length of the line segment.

To check a length of something: Use Distance Command Use List Command .

15.1 • Next point: 5.15. • Let‟s try to draw a set of lines by entering coordinates.1 and press „ESC‟ • These are absolute coordinates. .15.• Now turn OFF the SNAP and the GRID.1 • Next point: 5.1 • Next point: 8.1.7. • Select „Line‟ and specify the first point:

15. .  Select ‘line’ again.  Enter the first point: 2.1  Enter next point: @3<0  Enter next point: @6<90  Enter next point: @3<0 and press ‘ESC’  These are relative polar coordinates. Erase all the objects on the screen.1.

type “U” and Enter OR select Undo tool from standard toolbar • Select Redo tool from standard toolbar OR type “REDO” and Enter to reverse the undo command • Redo only works immediately after Undo command .Undo command • To undo the line you just drew.

Erasing • Move the cross-hair over the line you want to erase • Press pickbutton. selected line will disappear . the selected line become dotted • Hit the space bar. the pickbox appears • Type “e” and hit space bar • Press pickbutton.

The keys • Enter: executes the command • Esc: cancels and brings back the command • Space bar: substitute for the Enter key • F6: controls coordinate display • F7: controls GRID • F8: controls ORTHO • F9: controls SNAP • F10: controls POLAR .

OR select Open tool from standard toolbar.Saving and Opening a drawing • Select save or save as from menu/File OR Save tool from standard toolbar • To open select Open from menu/File. OR type “open” • To close AutoCAD select Exit from menu/File OR click the windows close button (X) at the upper right corner of the screen .

select one corner. It will ask for the opposite corner. Plot Area. As soon as you select the opposite corner the Plot Dialog box will appear and you are ready to plot. Drawing Orientation. paper units. . AutoCAD will ask to „Specify window for printing:‟. OR select Plot tool from standard toolbar • It will open the Plot Dialog Box • On the Plot Settings tab select paper size. Plot Scale and Plot option • Click on Window< button.Printing a drawing • Select Plot from menu/File.

 Try the ‘line’ command. the ‘rectangle’ command and the ‘circle’ command to resemble the shapes below: .

specify ‘Trees’ close to the circles. specify a height of 1. . or Select A from Draw toolbox  specify the start point close to the rectangle.0.  Similarly. Type ‘Text’ in the command line. and specify 0 angle of rotation. Type the word ‘House’ and press enter.
