Introduction  It is a Servicing unit owned by Indian railways Established in 1988 after converting the steam locomotive shed into Diesel locomotive shed. monthly. low maintenance requirements and cost effectiveness as compared to steam engine. quarterly. .fortnightly.  Locomotives serviced here are ready for the traffic services 365 days round the clock after attending their periodic schedule ( trip schedule. half yearly and yearly )  Diesel–electric locomotive were introduced to exploit their versatility.

 Got its first ISO certification in 1997 and ISO-9001 and ISO-14001 in September 2003.  It holds about 152 locomotives which are of 6 types. .  Kilometer earned by this shed is about 20 00 000 km/month approximately.  The plants hold about 1132 sanctioned strength of staff .

the diesel engine drives an electrical generator or alternator whose output provides power to the traction motors. The important components of diesel-electric propulsion are :  Diesel engine ( 16 cylinder .Diesel-electric locomotive  In a diesel-electric locomotive. There is no mechanical connection between the engine and the wheels. two stroke )  The main generator or alternator  Traction motor  Control system consisting of the engine governor  Electrical or electronic component to control or modify the electrical supply to the traction motions  Inverters .

Basic concept .

. AC output rectified to DC by rectifier banks and permanently connected in series. The output of traction alternator is used only for traction power .Alternator Consists of two independent stator windings and a rotating field common to both the windings.

Speedometer  An electronic Speedometer measure travelling speed and to record the status of selected locomotive engine parametes every second. .  A Locomotive driver communictes with the speedometer using moniter.  Vehical trend analysis in case of accident.

Working Principle .

•Traction motor act as genrator and the counter emf generated tends to reduce the speed of traction armature which reduces speed of locomotive. .Dynamic Braking •Dynamic Braking is used for diesel electric locomotive. •Dynamic braking lowers the wear of friction-based braking components as there is no mechanical connection . •Speed reduces upto speed of 20 km/hr.

Traction Motors  It is 4-pole dc series motor running on maximum supply voltage of 680v.  Traction motors are series- wound.  An electric locomotive as well as diesel-electric locomotive in indian railway contain generally six dc traction motors in one locomotive. direct-current forced .

•It is a shunt wound dc generator. •It is a low voltage 72v dc machine. .Exciter •It is used to excite the field of traction generator or alternator.

 A device which performs the opposite function (converting DC to AC) is known as an inverter. Rectifiers have many uses including as components of power supplies and as detectors of radio signals.Rectifiers  A rectifier is an electrical device that converts AC to DC. a process known as rectification.  Rectifiers are of two types: a) half wave rectifier b) full wave rectifier .

 Major repair section is Yearly Section.  Minor section is of three types out of course section.Repairing Section  There are basically two types of repair sections Major repair or heavy repair section and Minor repair section. and half yearly. quaterly. .
