• Memiliki arti sama dengan why • Menyatakan keheranan. A: How come Ati fails the tests? B: Maybe she is too tired. A: How come he wasn’t here yesterday? Word order untuk kalimat tanya tidak digunakan pada kalimat HOW COME.

HOW in daily life
• How do you spell ‘thought’? (bagaimana cara melakukan sesuatu) • How are you? How are you feeling? (kabar) • How do you do? (orang yang baru dikenal) • How is it going? How’s everything going? (kondisi sekarang)

UNIT 2 Negative Question

Situasi formal • Kata ‘not’ diletakkan setelah subjek kalimat
• Do you not have our own opinion?

• Adverb biasanya diletakkan setelah kata ‘not’

Situasi informal • Subjek diletakkan setelah negative auxiliary

Pemakaian
1. Surprise

Pemakaian WHY dalam negative question
1. Annoyance (terganggu)
• A: I forgot to buy some sugar. • B: Why don’t you write it down?

2. Anger (marah)
• A: Why don’t you leave me alone?

3. Ask question (mengajukan pertanyaan)
• Why haven’t you finished the report?

4. Polite request (permintaan dengan sopan)
• Why don’t you take a little break?

Pemakaian
• Kalimat negatif digunakan untuk meminta sesuatu, menanyakan informasi, atau menyuruh seseorang melakukan sesuatu.
• You wouldn’t have a pen, would you? • You couldn’t do me a favor, could you?

• Umumnya, jika kalimat utamanya negatif, jawaban yang diharapkan juga negatif. (berlaku sebaliknya) • Different!
• “Yes/no Question” dapat digunakan untuk kedua jawaban (yes/no).

Pemakaian khusus

• Kalimat perintah
• Sit down, will you?

• ‘This’ and ‘That’ berubah menjadi ‘it’
