 Education : Green Scholar (equivalent to today‟s graduate) from Elphistone College.  At age of 20 : joined his father who ran a small firm  Repression of Indians in the hands of British Rulers – poverty in India : root of Entrepreneur‟s philosophy.  In 1868 (aged 29) – started a trading co. with a capital of Rs.21,000.

 Made trips abroad (mainly England) – found scope for Indian Companies – esp. Textiles  1869 : acquired bankrupt oil mill in Chinchpokli, Mumbai – converted to cotton mill  Further, sold mill (in profit) to set up bigger mill in Nagpur with best men & machinery. Nagpur was close to 3 major raw materials:

 Awarded Businessman of the Year in 1994 by business magazine "Business India"  1995 : Received National Award for outstanding contribution in Development of Indian SSI.  Received The Distinguished Entrepreneurship Award from The PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry in 1997.  Received The Lifetime Achievement award for "Management" from AIMA in 2003.  BHU conferred him with a Doctrate; degree of “Doctors of letters" in October 2004.  Awarded "Padma Bhushan"in March 2005 for his contribution to Trade and Industry in 2005.
