How to Write a Good Pharagraph ?

Warm Up
One partner closes his/her eyes. The other partner chooses an object. Describe the object to the other person WITHOUT mentioning the name of the object. The person with eyes closed can only say, I need more details! until they can guess what the object is.

What is Pharagraph?
A paragraph is a group of sentences that develops an idea. The first sentence of a paragraph should be indented. The sentences in the paragraph support and give examples of the main idea.

Qualities of Good Pharagraph

A good paragraph always takes several tips for success into consideration. General guidelines: A paragraph has to be: > United focused on a single thing; > Coherent easily understandable to a reader; > Adequately developed; > Neatly structured. Our tips on writing a paragraph: Long paragraphs arent always of high quality, and vice versa. The length of paragraph writing depends on how good a topic is unfolded.

The Example of Bad Pharagraph

I live in a house in west Provo. I like the view from our house. We have lived there since November. We also have a car that I like very much. We were in an accident a few months ago. We hit a deer that was crossing the street at night. I felt sorry for the deer, but it cost a lot of money to repair the car.

The Example of Good Pharagraph

My husband and I bought our first house last November, and we love it. It is located in west Provo near Utah Lake. Although we cannot see the lake from our house, we do have a beautiful view of Mount Timpanogos. Our house has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living room and a family room, and a large kitchen and dining area. We also have a large backyard and a small garden. We are very happy to own our own home, and I hope that we will live there for several years.

Pharagraph Structure
A paragraph should have a logical structure that is easy to put into an outline: I. Topic Sentence II. Supporting Detail Supporting III. Supporting Detail Sentences IV. Supporting Detail V. Concluding Sentence

Topic Sentence

A topic sentence is the sentence that tells the reader the main idea of the paragraph, and motivates the reader to want to read more. The topic sentence should contain only one main idea. It should be specific and detailed. The topic sentence is often found at the beginning of the paragraph, but it can be in other places, too. Our tips on writing a paragraph: Some journalists say that a good topic sentence is made of five words. Five words are quite enough to state a problem.

cant be an incomplete sentence implies a question that the paragraph is going to answer

cant be a fact

Topic Sentence
The topic is narrow topic cant be a question

has a topic and a controlling idea

tells the reader the subject of the paragraph

The Topic is Narrow Topic

The topic of topic sentence is not wide or too wide, and not too narrow. For the example, marriage and Fullerton College cant be the topic of topic sentence, because the topics is too wide that would be impossible to write about these topics in ONE paragraph. The topics must be narrowed, so...

The Topic is Narrow Topic

marriage teen marriage cross-cultural marriage age differences in marriage Fullerton College Student services at FC Fullerton College soccer team Applying to FC

The Example of Bad Topic Sentence

Jenny went to the Grand Canyon this winter and to Mexico in the spring of 1994. My friend is nice. My brother like his bedroom.

The Example of Good Topic Sentence

When she was a child, she lived in a house that had a strange atmosphere. There is a canyon in Northern Arizona that is the most beautiful place on Earth. His favorite item of clothing is a comfortable, worn pair of jeans that he has had for many years. My husband and I bought their first house last November, and their love it.

Supporting Sentences
Every good paragraph should have 3 5

supporting ideas. Each supporting piece of evidence must be tied back explicitly to the thesis.

These sentences give evidence. Dont assume your reader understands your logic lay it out for him or her. Be brief and to the point a supporting argument shouldnt take more than 2 3 sentences to explain.

Supporting Sentences
General guidelines: > Share an idea with your reader; > The more sentences you add to a paragraph, the more your ideas are developed; > move from general, abstract ideas to specific qualification of an idea. Our tips on writing a paragraph: State facts and opinions separately. Examples :

Concluding Sentence
Your final sentence should tie up your arguments and link them back to your thesis. General guidlines: > Restate the main idea of your paragraph; > Use different words for restating. Our tips on writing a paragraph: Restating is not the only way to end a paragraph. Transition words and jokes are good instruments, too. Example :
