SPECIMEN COLLECTION VALID LABORATORY RESULTS ARE DEPENDENT UPON PROPER SPECIMEN COLLECTION AND HANDLING PRIOR TO THE ARRIVAL OF THE SAMPLE IN THE LABORATORY. .

.SPECIMEN COLLECTION STANDARD PRECAUTIONS Since a medical history and examination cannot identify all patients with blood-borne infectious agents. standard precautions should be consistently used for all patients.

.SPECIMEN COLLECTION THE BLOOD AND BODY FLUIDS OF EVERY PATIENT MUST BE CONSIDERED TO BE POTENTIALLY INFECTIOUS.

SPECIMEN COLLECTION BODY FLUIDS TO WHICH STANDARD PRECAUTIONS APPLY: • BLOOD TISSUE • BODY FLUIDS CONTAINING VISIBLE BLOOD • SEMEN AND VAGINAL SECRETIONS • • • • • • CEREBROSPINAL FLUID SYNOVIAL FLUID PLEURAL PERICARDIAL PERITONEAL FLUID AMNIOTIC FLUID .

SPECIMEN COLLECTION PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES • HCW SHOULD OBSERVE STANDARD PRECAUTIONS WHEN HANDLING SPECIMENS • SPECIMEN SHOULD BE PLACED IN A LEAK PROOF CONTAINER .

SPECIMEN COLLECTION • DO NOT CONTAMINATE THE OUTSIDE OF THE CONTAINER • DO NOT OVERFILL ANY SPECIMEN CONTAINER .

SPECIMEN COLLECTION • DISCARD PROPERLY THE CONTAMINATED CLEANING MATERIAL USED. EXAMPLE TISSUE PAPER • SPECIMEN CONTAINER SHOULD BE CLEARLY AND PROPERLY LABELED .

SPECIMEN COLLECTION • HAND HYGIENE AFTER THE PROCEDURE .

IF NOT SPECIAL PRECAUTION MUST BE TAKEN .TRANSPORTING OF SPECIMEN • ALL SPECIMENS MUST BE PROMPTLY TRANSPORTED TO THE LABORATORY SECTION • ENSURE IT IS PLACED IN A LEAK PROOF CONTAINER.

TRANSPORTING OF SPECIMEN • ENSURE THAT SPECIMENS ARE PROPERLY RECEIVED BY THE LABORATORY STAFF TOGETHER WITH THE APPROPRIATE REQUEST FORM .

TRANSPORTING OF SPECIMEN • NURSING ATTENDANT SHOULD WASH HANDS AFTER HANDLING/ TRANSPORTING THE SPECIMEN .
