METALCORE is a fusion of the genres HEAVY METAL and HARDCORE PUNK. It is known for its large use of “screaming” mixed with the typical singing voice and is known for its heavy, expressive values. Main instruments used include electric guitars and drums. METALCORE is one of the many branches of genres associated with MODERN ROCK as the heavy it is, the better it is.

METALCORE became its own genre in the early 2000’s when it picked up popularity and became a more mainstream music style.

This style is more about rebellion and is designed to shock people and be bold. METALCORE is a more precise term for a style of “SCREAMO” where the singer uses their throat to create a more aggressive style of singing.

THE “METALCORE” GENRE
METALCORE, as with most other heavy genres, is not reflected well on by media who have over the years associated it with suicide and misbehaviour due to its depressing values.

As with PUNK and METAL, this style is designed to shock people and get across a message.

Culturally, main listeners are grouped into the stereotype of “emos” and “goths” and is seen as a more obscene and less sophisticated genre to listen to.

Many religious groups find the genre “~sinful” and “satanic” due to its lyrics and many references to joining the devil.

The emo/goth culture became mainstream in the 2000’s influenced by the growing popularity of rock and metal music. Fans chose to dress in darker clothes and some took on a cliché “emo” look by wearing black, having black hair and wearing black eye makeup.

Metal originated in the 1960’s so there are many 30-60 year olds who are also interested in the genre. Although the magazine is aimed at a younger audience since metalcore arrived in the 2000’s, there are older metal fans who could take an interest in the magazine as the genre is a modern form of metal.

GOTH CULTURE
Goth/emo culture has became highly criticised over the years for its links to suicide and depression. Fans of the genre tend to either embrace the “emo” label or hate it. These fans are normally preteen to 20’s.

LONG TERM METAL FANS

WHO IS MY TARGET AUDIENCE?
TEENAGERS

Teenagers are known for wanting to be rebellious and rock allows them to feel this so the main target audience is teenagers. Metalcore is a modern genre only formed in the past 10 years so they are the first and only generation to grow up with it. Pop has became decreasingly popular with teenagers turning to alternative music, metal being one of them. As the metalcore industry grows, the teenage fans grows with it.

BREAKING THE STEREOTYPE
“Emo” is now less of a music genre and more of a offensive way to name a rock/metal fan. It is a cliché name and the overall look associated with a typical emo is similar to that of a goth wearing black clothes, black makeup, dying their hair black and covering themselves in tattoos. The typical emo look derives from the late punk era where people were dressing to shock and punk/rock bands wanted to create darker music so created darker images for themselves. Some modern RELIGIOUS VIEWS TO METAL Extreme Christians believe that Metal is the music of the devil find it satanic for its mentions to hell, the devil, suicide and murder. However others do not and there are many Metal groups who have sang Christian Metal at some point in their career.

bands keep to dressing in an extreme way to shock and bands such as Slipknot have costumes and masks designed to scare people. Some modern bands such as Black Veil Brides seem to support the stereotype whereas other heavier bands such as Parkway Drive keep to dressing however they want and focus more on the music.

Overall Metal has a negative stereotype that I would I like to break away from with my magazine.

HOW MY COVER RELATES TO MY TARGET AUDIENCE
The main colour scheme of my cover is black and white which represents the heavy genre with its boldness. Black is related to the genre instantly and is heavily used on the cover. However I wanted a fresher less dark image to be given to the fans of the genre so the main colour used is white to show it is not as negative as the media makes out.

I wanted to make the genre look more professional to allow it to become a more accepted genre in the music industry.
A lot of rock/metal magazines focus the cover to make the fans look wild, chaotic and violent and I think that this image is becoming outdated and the fans of metal would like a magazine more based of music than the image metal gives people. I used articles aimed directly at current affairs the metalcore fans will be interested in such as Mitch Luckers sudden death which has brought fans of the genre together in a commutative way and allows the magazine to be accepted into this community.

HOW MY CONTENTS RELATES TO MY TARGET AUDIENCE
As with my cover the main colours used on my contents are black which works well to represent the dark genre but the use of more white helps to give it a cleaner fresher image. I used black and white images as many metal fans prefer less colour and a new Tumblr trend for many metal fans has been to only reblog images that are black and white so appeals more to them.

Metal fans often like to turn away from being mainstream as much as they can so the images used showed alternative styles. Metal fans tend to be very against pop music as well so use of the records stands for this and often there is a battle to be the best metal fan and know all the routes of the genre.
Metal appeals to both genders so this contents appeals to both. Many female metal fans are not girly so pink and flowers etc are not needed to catch their eye and instead red and blue are used.

HOW MY DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD RELATES TO MY TARGET AUDIENCE
The colours used on the 3 images on the left page work well with current “instagram” phase which many alternative teenagers, many whom will like this music genre, are becoming more and more interested in so these colours will appeal to them. The smoky black and white image is very cliché of metal magazines and appeals to the audience because it has a rebellious feel which they have become accustomed to seeing and so the overall style appeals to them. The model is wearing flicked eyeliner which is also something many girls in metal wear so fits and symbolises the genre. I added a section where the readers views on the article were published so the readers can actually become a part of the main articles as well making it more personal to them. I made one of the images a full page size because fans of rock magazines often like to fill their walls with posters from magazines and this means they can take it out and be able to add it to their wall.

Many young rock fans have blogs dedicated to the genre, these help to represent their ideas and styles. These are some images I found on Tumblr which get reblogged by teenage rock fans and show clearly the artistic, outlandish way they want to represent themselves. I found that many rock fans had blogs where they only reblogged black and white images, black and white overall seems to represent them very well.
