METHODOLOGY OF GROUP DISCUSSION

Communication is not all about what you say but what others understand.
Man has always used discussions and conversations as ways to communicate. When does conversation become a discussion? When two or more people talk about a particular issue or topic in detail-exploring its various dimensions and exchanging ideas intelligently, we say they are discussing it.

Group Discussion-Definition
A GD is a methodology used by an organization to gauge whether the candidate has certain personality traits and/or skills that it desires in its members. In this methodology, the group of candidates is given a topic or a situation, given a few minutes to think about the same, and then asked to discuss the it among themselves for 15-20 minutes.

Some of the personality traits the GD is trying to gauge may include : Oral Communication Initiative Clarity of thought Decision making ability Presence of mind Managing situational stress Listening capacity Flexibility Interpersonal team play Maturity Reasoning Power Influencing ability Leadership skills Problem solving skills Body language

Why Group Discussion?


Conducted to check
Interactive skills How good we are at communicating with other people Behaviour, participation and contribution in the group, How well do we listen to viewpoints of others and how openminded are we in accepting views contrary to your own. Decision-making ability and cooperation. We should try to be as true as possible to these aspects.

Who monitor the discussion?


An officer, usually known as evaluator or group testing officer monitors the discussion. The Assessors decides The topic of discussion. Time limit for discussion Group Strength

Types of GD
GDs can be topic-based or case-based. Topic based Gds can be classified into three types 1. Factual Topics 2. Controversial Topics 3. Abstract Topics 4. Case based GD

Evaluation Components
During a GD employers evaluate potential for leadership and ability to work in a team. The four components generally evaluated in a group discussion are: Knowledge Communication skills Group behaviour Leadership potential

TYPE OF GROUP MEMBERS WE MAY HAVE TO DEAL WITH:


Quarrelsome person Self centered ( How to spot them). They block the group discussion. They are attention seekers. They are dominating in nature. Leaders ( How to spot them) They initiate group discussion. They encourage others to speak. They are good speakers. They clarify others points. They lead the group discussion in proper direction

Communication Skills
Active listening Clarity of thought and expression Apt language Appropriateness of body language Lucidity Tone Voice Articulation Fluency Modulation Good delivery It isnt sufficient to have ideas. They have to be expressed effectively.

Effective Use of Body Language


Attentive Maintain interest in the group Avoiding pointing out fingers Avoiding monotonous posture by shifting slightly in the chair or placing arm on the back of your chair Not showing interest or dislike in the topic. Even if the topic is not of interest we should try to develop interest.

Leadership Skills
The success of any team depends to a large extent, on its leader. The candidate who possesses both functional ability and coordinating ability would emerge as the leader. Functional ability involves knowledge, mental and physical energy, emotional stability, objectivity, communication skill, integrity and emotional intelligence

HOW TO INTERUPT OTHERS SKILLFULLY


Interrupt using the following words Thats good! However. I agree. In addition. Thats a great idea. But.. I am glad that you have brought about this. In fact. You are on the right track. Another important point . This point need further elaboration. Very correct. But I would add that. That is right. But sometimes Fine You said it! That is it!

NEVER USE THE FOLLOWING WORDS TO INTERRUPT:


That will never work. That idea is not a practical one.. You are wrong.. You do not know what you are talking about. That is ridiculous. What are you talking about? Why are you so confused? We are talking about something else.

COMMON MISTAKES AT GROUP DISCUSSION:



More Quantity but no Quality. Uncontrolled emotions. Showing off Excessive Knowledge. He got Noticed But for the wrong reasons. He failed to manage his insecurities. Excuse me! Avoid getting in one to one discussion. Try not to interrupt when someone speaking. Never try to overshadow anyone give space to all.

Never starts blame game during GD Respect to everyones thought Leadership in a GD is established implicitly through one's performance in a GD. Difficulty presents an opportunity. Be different. Find the remedy

If we do not understand the meaning of the topic, should ask the moderator to explain it. Be as natural as possible. Take time to think of what you are going to say if allowed, then jot down your thoughts. Dont start speaking until you have clearly understood and analyzed the subject.
