It also high light candidates key skills and experiences. It ends positively outlining when the candidate will be available for interview

COVERING LETTER template

Dos

Take your time with each letter/application Find out the hiring manager's name, and open the letter with a proper greeting. Identify the position you're applying for, including the job code or reference number (if there is one). Give reasons for why you are applying and why you would be a successful employee for the organisation sell yourself! Tailor your answers to the specific organisation make them unique to that organization. Keep your sentences specific, short and precise

Go for quality rather than quantity Make sure you present your letter and CV professionally set it out logically and coherently. Limit your covering letter to one side of A4 if possible any longer and the attention of the reader will wander. Use a formal tone and sign off the letter appropriately. Do end with a statement of intent.

Donts

Rush your applications Use an informal tone for your letter Send out numerous generic covering letters Use long, vague sentences and WAFFLE! Make statements about yourself which are untrue or which you are unable to evidence. Focus entirely on yourself, make sure you balance your letter between yourself and the organisation you are applying to

Rush or neglect the presentation of your CV and letter, good presentation is essential. Sign off the letter in an informal manner e.g. thanks, cheers or even no sign off is deplorable! Use illegible fonts and colors on the letter this is not professional! Go on for more than one page. Two pages is the absolute limit, any more than this and it is likely the employer will not even read your application as it is too time consuming!
