• Copper is deadlier than Visha
(poison).

• Poison has only one Dosha.

• Copper has eight Doshas.

• Ref. of Copper toxicity even in

Charaka 1/113.
Visha.
• That which causes irritation to the
body.

• Has qualities that are opposite to

Oja.
Tamra.
• If not properly processed, acts as a
poison.

• Causes eight untoward effects if

consumed.

• They are:
1) Bhrama 4) Sweda 7)Aruchi
2) Murcha 5) Kleda 8) Chittasantapa
Tamra Doshas.
• Bhrama: Improper perception
• Murcha: Loss of consciousness
• Vidaha: Burning sensation
• Sweda: Excessive perspiration, Heat
• Kleda: Increased secretions
• Vamana: Emesis
• Aruchi: Loss of taste
• Chittasantapa: Restlessness,
irritability
Methods To Eradicate Tamra
Doshas.
• Selection of good variety of Tamra for
processing.
• Samanya Shodhana.
• Vishesha Shodhana.
• Marana.
• Amritikarana.
• Bhasma Pareeksha.
• Amla pareeksha.
• Administration of proper dose.
Selection.
• 2 Varieties:
– Naipala
Red, Soft, Malleable, Ductile, Not turn
black when heated
Best for therapeutic use
– Mlechha
Pale, Blackish, Hard, Light, Brittle.
Not suitable for processing.
Samanya Shodhana.
• General method of purification used
for all metals
• Sequentially quenching 7 times each
in:
– Taila
– Takra
– Gomutra
– Kanji
– Kulattha Kwath
Vishesha Shodhana.
• Many methods described in different
texts

• 2 methods in Ayu. Prakash.

– 1) Coat Tamra with Arka ksheer, Snuhi

ksheer and saindhavaΔ quenched in
Nirgundi swarasa x 3 times.

– 2) Pachana of Tamra patra, with Gomutra+

Amla + Kshara,using strong Agni for 1
Marana.
• Many methods described in different
texts.

• 8 methods in Ayu. Prakash.

• Tedious process.

• Number of Puta required is high.

Amritikarana.
• Process of eradication of residual
doshas from the bhasmas of
metals………..R.T 2/58.
• 3 methods mentioned by Acharya
Sadanand Sharma.
• Panchamrita, Surana kanda,Kumaari
swarasa used.
• Again Puta required.(3 Gaja putas/ 7
Varaha putas)
Pareeksha.
• Bhasma Pareeksha: All tests
mentioned in the texts preformed to
asses quality of prepared bhasma
• Amla Pareeksha:
– Specific test performed to identify
proper bhsama formation.
– Curd, Nimbu swarasa etc acidic media, it
shouldn’t give a bluish tinge.
– Identifies the proper conversion of Cu to
Sulphide.
Dose of Tamra Bhasma.
• The dose of Tamra bhasma has to be
carefully selected.

• Patients Bala needs to be assessed.

• 1/8th Ratti to 1 Ratti is the

recommended dose.
Copper.
• Essential trace element.
• Has a number of important roles in
the body
– Bones and connective tissue (form and
repair)
– Energy production in cells (Kerbs Cycle)
– Immune system
– Regulating glandular system (adrenals,
thyroid)
– Reproductive system (estrogen
Acc to W.H.O.
• Daily requirement of Copper 2-5
mg/day
• Upper safe limit for consumption 10-
12mg/day
• Almost all Cu in body is bound to
proteins: ceruloplasmin or
metallothionein
• Toxic in unbound form
• Accumulates primarily in the liver,
brain and female reproductive
Cu toxicity due to.
• Excessive supplementation
• The increasingly common problem of
low levels of Zinc in the diet
• Contaminated food and drinking
water due to contact with metallic
copper
• External exposures such as a copper
IUD or accidental agricultural
overspray
Signs and symptoms of Cu
Toxicity.
• High B.P
• Unexplained nausea
• Irritability
• Constant fatigue
• Trouble concentrating
• Unsound sleep
• Ulcerative colitis
• Degeneration of nervous system
• Liver toxicity
• Anorexia
Conclusion.
• Toxicity of Copper known since
Samhita kala.
• Proper processing of Copper essential
before it can be used therapeutically.
(GMP)
• Strict monitoring of every step of
processing.
• Physico chemical analysis of finished
product is mandatory.
