WHAT IS MOLADI?
MOLADI: South African technology Cast a house in one day Resulting in structure stronger than brick. A cost effective, holistic design and build technology that far outweighs poorly designed costly concrete-block and masonry structures

WHAT IS MOLADI? Activity Description

Moladi is utilizing a unique plastic injection molded technology to produce cast-in-place mortar structures.

The process allows unskilled labourers to use indigenous

materials to quickly and cheaply construct high standard permanent buildings that are earthquake, cyclone and tsunami

resistant.

ADVANTAGES
Eliminating chasing for plumbing and electrical pipe work, plastering and beam filling. Resulting in a wall stronger than brick. Cheaper than structures built with concrete blocks and bricks

ADDRESSING THE FOUR KEY CHALLENGES

1. 2. 3. 4. Lack of resources Insufficient funds Shortage of skills and Time constraints

CHARATERISTICS
Production cycle completed in an 8 hour day Erect moladi - 4 hours Fill moladi - 2 hours Remove moladi the following day - 2 hours

CHARACTERISTICS
Pour is completed in 2 hours The more the volume of fill the more labour is used. One cubic meter of mortar (concrete without stone) consists of;
1800 kg or .720 m of local decomposed granite/river sand. 250 kg of ordinary portland cement (OPC). 5 litres of moladiCHEM a non-toxic, water based chemical cocktail - application = 1 litre per 50 Kg cement. 200 litres of water.

CONTD..
Fly ash can be used as an extender to substitute the use of cement a compressive strength of between 10 and 30 mPa can be achieved in a 28-day period, depending on the cement: water ratio. Reinforcement is in strategic positions the mortar mixture produces a fast curing aerated mortar that flows easily, is waterproof and possesses good thermal and sound insulating properties.

Contd..
Under normal conditions the mortar usually sets during the night (12 to 15 hours) and the formwork is removed the following morning. There is no need to vibrate the mortar in order to achieve a smooth finish. Electrical and water piping positioned within the cavity is cast in situ.

LABOUR REQUIREMENT
Labour is required to build a 45 m Erect moladi - 10 labourers are needed to complete 4 hours work. Fill moladi - 7 labourers are needed to, if manually filling the form with buckets, to complete 2 hours work Remove moladi - 6 labourers are needed to complete 2 hours work.

COST
CASE A Area on plan = 400m Length of walling = 80m Assume 3m high walling @ Currency 200.00/m Then cost/m = 80 x 3 x 200 400 = Currency 120.00/m CASE B Area on plan = 400m Length of walling = 208m Assume 3m high walling @ Currency 200.00/m Then cost/m = 208 x 3 x 200 400 = Currency 312.00/m
