Chapter 4 Our first glimpse of the army itself (besides the Duce) is of a gay soldier. Shows that while there are struggles in war, they can go beyond the war itself. This is the first soldier we meet, yet he does not join out of patriotism. This challenges our conception of a soldier and makes them more human as a result. It also shows the lack of focus of the soldiers on the war, as our first impression of the army is one more concerned with their sex life than their country and wellbeing.

AO3 Compare and contrast texts In the Great Gatsby we also hear and see Gatsby as a soldier. The pristine lieutenants uniform is also used to improve his sex life as he seeks out the neighbourhood harlot among the other officers. This also shows the war as secondary to the concerns of the men on the ground. While those in power may be concerned with winning the war, those on the ground are shown as keen to use this opportunity to exploit the sexual possibilities of a uniform.

AO4 Historical Context Gay people were outcast as unbiblical, and as such seen as condemned to the seventh circle of Hell. AO4 Context Homosexuality was starting to gain mainstream reception in 1994. Soon, gay people would be allowed to be partnered. The closet door had been wide open since the hippie love boom in the 60s and 70s, but in the two intervening decades gay tolerance didnt subside. It was legalised in Australia, which was previously openly opposed. AO4 Context of reception Gay people have been so accepted by our culture that it is an alien concept not to have any mention of them in any book except a book about hell. Women bishops are starting to become a possibility, and therefore gay bishops as the next step are certainly possible. Any homophobic comments are punished both by the state and by the social populous, as opposed to some varieties of drugs which are largely accepted socially but strictly punished by the state, intolerance is panned by everyone.
