BELT AND PULLEY FRICTION

• Friction is surface phenomenon that generates in equal and opposite pair of forces acting parallal to the surfaces of contact. • Frictional force generates between two bodies in contact, to resist the relative motion or tendency of relative motion between the two bodies.

• In the case of belt pulley arrangement, when the pulley is assumed frictionless, tension on both the sides of the belt is same as there is no resistance to either side of the tension.

• When the pulley is rough then as we have to pull one side of the belt against the friction, the tension on that side becomes greater than that on the other side i.e. T2 > T1 as shown in the figure.

.

the belt has tendency to slip towards left. . Hence. the friction force has the direction as shown in the figure.Forces acting on the element are: (1) Tension T on the right hand side (2) Tension T + d T on the left hand side (3) Normal reaction of the pulley dN (4) Friction force • Here if we assume that d T is positive.

& as a result dT 0 • The force balance in the tangential direction t gives : -----9 -------------- . zero contact then dN 0.e.• Here as the element is infitesimally small so if d θ 0 i. dF 0.

---------(1) The force balance in the normal direction provides: Noting that for small dN = . so ----------(2) .

Integrating from 0 to β leads. From above two equations (1) and (2) we get. Or .

• The formula is applicable in all the cases i.e. If the belt is wrapped around a drum n times. belt/rope-pulley arrangement and belt/ropedrum arrangement. the angle would be 2πn. • β is the total angle of wrap and should be expressed in radians.Here. .
