Poverty & Homelessness

Working one day at a time To help the people rid There selves of these misfortunes Presentation by: Tina Whittington

The Industry of Human Services

*Greatest concerns -Ways to make money are limited -Demands are raising, but no money out there -Human services are seen as a stigma on society

About Poverty and homeless

By definition, a homeless person - Does not have a permit residence - Has a privately or publicly ran residence - Living temporally with others Qualifying for Homeless Governmental Assistance
You must have eligible income coming in Clean record from Prison Detainment

* The above rules are an Act of Congress, or a state law.

Demand and Supply

The supply of housing for the homeless is not increasing Homeless people are in higher numbers due to our economic crisis - Food drives fall short to fully meet the needs
- No money to create ways to provide housing to the homeless

Lack of Funding
The needed funds to keep opening, facilities that are needed for the homeless are just not there. -Fundraising ideas are limited and require a lot of volunteers -Even free, rundown buildings require proper funding to maintain -A lot of volunteer workers do it for free to be able to provide services as a way of making up for the poor funding

The Stigmas and Problems of using Services

Many homeless people will not admit theyre homeless or are too mentally ill to receive help. People do not feel comfortable taking from the services or do not want to admit they have help A record will follow you if you have applied for government services
*this would be an unwanted record.

Working Together
As human service workers we are here to define a better living for people in need of services in all areas by sacrificing our pay and selfness Provide free counseling Provide free food drives Provide seminars Provide transportation Providing medical

Why work for Social Justice?

People need to know that there are ways of getting help Reaching out to an organization Reaching out to someone Picking up Pamphlets Doing Research on Organizations or programs

Working towards Social Justice

Since the government only allows a small amount of funds, it is our part to step up and provide the rest. As human service workers we need to sacrifice most of our personal needs so others needs can be meet -Although homelessness and poverty may never be cured, we can at least work to keep them safe and healthy

Changing Views on Human Services

My views have changed on a few aspects of human services Did not realize the need of services would be rising Gained a better understanding about the poor economy New realization on the amount of Debts and loans

New Respect for Government Role

Realization of how much governmental funding goes into these programs Assistance with -Elderly - Handicapped -Families with children - Native Americans - Veterans - Making sure children have a future

What I have learned

To provide all people including my clients with an unbiased opinion To always listen with empathy To redirect the homeless Always research and give the best and updated information possible

My Future Career
Better Understanding on the Causes of Homelessness New ways to build funds New Listening Skills

Lending A Helping Hand!
