What is Microsoft Windows


MS Windows is an operating system for a computers. It boast of a feature known as GUI or Graphical User Interface.
The operating system is one of the two types of software which prepares the computer for use. The OS aids the application software like word processing, spreadsheets, graphics and databases to communicate with the computer and manage its internal and external resources.

What is GUI?
GUI is a screen based on pictures rather than letters. It is a screen which allows the user to interact with the machine through graphical forms. Modern day computers are mostly Windows based and are basically design to make use of the mouse.

A mouse is a peripheral device used to move the cursor around the screen and this device makes it easier to work on a computer.

The MOUSE Terms


1. POINT to place the mouse pointer on the item you want to use 2. CLICK to quickly press the left mouse button 3. RIGHT CLICK to press the right button of the mouse 4. DOUBLE CLICK to press the left mouse button twice in rapid succession 5. DRAG to press the left mouse button and hold it while moving the mouse 6. DROP to release the fingers from pressing from pressing the left or right button of the mouse

Features of MS Windows
1. Intuitive and easy to use commands are readily available and there is no need to memorize each availability of the mouse helps the user to select the needed commands 2. Standardize procedures and online help feature steps of the commands are very basic which could be applied to other software applications provides online help from Help menu and assist user whenever a problem is encountered

3. True type fonts technology provides user with a variety of Font Styles and may be scaled to any size 4. Multimedia Extensions and Support allows document to be presented with the use of multimedia devices 5. OLE (Object Linking and Embedding) allows graphics and text to be modified with other application

6. Drop and Drag Feature feature of the mouse which makes duplicating and transferring of texts, objects and graphics easier 7. Consistent Interface Feature and Systematic Arrangement of functions the use of windows allows easy communication between the user and the machine through icons arrange and group according to their uses and functions

Parts of the Opening Screen for Windows

Desktop- It is the largest part of the window. It is where you see all the other items necessary to work on an application. The desktop is also called the background or wall paper. Like the usual background or wall paper, it comes in different designs and colors.

Icons- these are small graphical symbols or pictures that represent the basic commands or software applications you can use. Folders- These looks like a typical folder that contains files. Folders are more commonly known as directories. Folders are containers for saved files and document. By default, the My Documents folder is on the desktop Start Button- It is primary button found at the lower left corner of the screen which is used to quickly open programs and documents. Task Bar- It is horizontal bar usually at the button of the screen and to the right of the start button, which is the quickest way to get help. This bar also contains all windows which are minimized. System Tray- It is the small area on the right side of the Task Bar which show the time and certain programs running on the background.

Basic Icons on the Desk Top


My Computer- It is an icon that shows all the programs files, and hardware inside the computer unit. Recycle Bin- It is an icon that serves as a trash can where all the temporarily deleted files are found.

Network Neighborhood- It is an icon that helps the user to set up the network and to prepare it for use on the Internet. My Documents- It is an icon that contains all the current users files, picture, music, e-Books, etc.
Start Button- It is button that quickly opens programs and documents.

Control Menu Button- A button found at the upper left corner of a screen window used to minimize, maximize, close, and resize the window. Title Bar- The blue bar found at the top of the window. It contains the name of the application that is currently being used. It also includes the minimized, maximize, restore and close button. Minimize Button- A button at the rightmost portion of the window which reduces the size of the window into it on the taskbar. Maximize Button- A button at the right side of the window which enlarges the size of the window to fit in the entire screen.

Restore Button- A button which appears when the maximize button is selected. It takes the position of the maximize button and it is used to return the window to its previous size before it was minimize or maximize. Menu Bar- A bar that falls on the second line of the application window that contains the choices of menus and options used as commands for the program. Toolbars- A bar containing the small graphical symbols that represent different commands. Window Border- The outside edge of every screen window used to increase or decrease its size.

Close Button- A button at the upper right corner of the screen just to the right of the maximize button used to close the document or the application. Scroll Bars- Bars located at the right and lower right side of the screen. These bars are used to move to the other parts of the document when it does not fit in the window. Resize Tab- Found at the lower right corner of the window screen used to lengthen or shorten the window. Status Bar- A bar at the lower portion of the screen which displays the command being used in the program.
