A Classroom Diagnosis and Remediation

A student in Ms. Smiths second grade class was having difficulty with addition examples involving regrouping from ones place to tens place. Then the students paper showed the following example:

pointed out the error by suggesting that the regrouped value was forgotten, explained the proper sequence of procedures that should be used, and gave the student a guide sheet on which there were ten similar examples to be solve

Mathematics is a boring subject that effect students computational ability.

Diagnosis of the childs mathematical difficulty has been made, but the prescription may be more of a disease than cure.

What is need is a meaningful approach to diagnosis and prescription

Reading specialists who have experienced great success working one-on-one with older struggling readers want parents, politicians, and program planners to know:

1.

Requiring students to take a remedial reading class in middle or high school stigmatizes and humiliates students, thereby undercutting the motivation which research shows is critical to achievement. Some will simply drop out of school.

Remedy: Pull each student from this required class once a week to receive reading remediation in a private, 30-minute session.

2. Teaching poor readers in a class is not intense enough to accelerate growth in the least amount of time.

Remedy: The most effective teaching model for reading remediation is that of a personal reading trainer who provides potent, one-on-one instruction during which the student is totally engaged and the teacher is totally attending.

3. Frequent assessment causes teachers and students to focus more on testing than on learning; test apprehension (common to poor readers) fractures the learning environment.

Remedy: Because reading remediation requires building skills rather than learning course content, reading trainers would minimize testing and grading. Progress is best monitored by observing the student in the actual act of reading.
