Types of Fuel Injection Systems
Port fuel injection. (PFI/MPFI)  Throttle Body Fuel Injection. (TBI)  Mechanical or CIS injection system.  1958 Corvette 1st fuel injection (Manual)

Pressure regulator. Fuel filter and lines.  . 3 logic device. Sensors :      Actuators :  output devices the computer operates. Fuel pump. Injector or injectors. input data to the computer. Fuel rail.Electronic Injection System    Electronic Parts Computer (PCM):     Mechanical Parts Fuel tank.

Electronic Parts  Computer (PCM) logic device. output devices the computer operates  Actuators  4 .  Sensors  Electronic Parts input data to the computer.

Fuel Filter and Fuel Lines Sock on gas pump  Inline  Screen in injector  5 .

 Some are mechanical but newer cars use 6 an electronic system.pipe that fills the injectors.Fuel Rail & Pressure Regulator The rail .  Pressure regulator controls the pressure to injectors.  .  Pressure adjusted for changes in intake manifold vacuum.

pumps fuel to injector from fuel tank holds pressure against e injector’s valve. Fuel pump    Computer triggers valve with electrical signal called a pulse.Fuel Injectors   Injectors  electrically operated valve.  (pulse width) 7 .

  Pintle Needle   8 . note electrical connection. at spray end where fuel shoots out.  Solenoid inside.Fuel Injector Parts  “O” Ring seals   fuel rail intake manifold.

And/or camshaft sensor (CPS). Group  2.How the Injector Fires The computer grounds the injector to turn it “pulse” -.“Pulse width”  Pulses timed by crankshaft sensor (CKPS). Sequential injection 9  .  Three ways to fire the injectors:  1. Gang injection  3.

Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor (MAP)  Measures difference between atmospheric pressure and intake manifold vacuum. 12 .

13 .Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAF)  Measures mass of air entering intake manifold.

 Electronically: it’s a potentiometer.  14 .  The voltage signal changes as resistance in pot.Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) Measure throttle angle for PCM. changes.

Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (ECT) Measure engines coolant temperature.  15 .  Sensor mounted in engines water jacket.

 16 .Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Works like CTS measures temperature of intake air.  detect intake air temperature  achieving the precise control of the A/F ratio.

Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) Monitors VEHICLE SPEED  NOT ENGINE SPEED  17 .

( HO2S) 18 . 1996 /newer use two O2 sensors. Low voltage <. High voltage >.Oxygen Sensor (O2 or HO2S)      Measure the amount of oxygen in the exhaust stream. Some O2 sensors are heated.45 is a lean signal.45 is a rich signal.

Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP)  Uses Notches in crankshaft 19 .

Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP) 20 .

 21 .Knock Sensor (KS) Senses detonation which the engine is running.  PCM will retard spark when detonation is detected.

Computer Actuators (Outputs) Fuel Injectors  IAC Idle Air Control  Fuel Pump Relay  CANP Canister Purge  EGR Regulator  Cooling Fan Relay  Torque Converter  MIL-Malfunction Indicator Lamp  22 .
