WHAT IS HEAT EXCHANGER ? ? ?

Heat exchanger is a piece of equipment for efficient heat transfer from one medium to another.

Helical coil heat exchanger

HELICAL COIL

Helical coils are compact in size and provides distinct benefit like higher film coefficient, more effective utilization of available pressure drop, which results in efficient and less expensive design.

Types of helical coil available :

When a fluid flows in helical coiled tube centrifugal forces causes secondary fluid motion which gives rise to heat excahnge

When a fluid flows through a straight tube the velocity is maximum at the tube center, zero at the tube wall and symmetrically distributed about the axis.
However when a fluid flows though a curved tube, the primary velocity profile is distorted by the addition of secondary flow pattern.

WORKING

1. Fill the cylindrical tank with water such that the entire setup of helical coil immersed in liquid. 2. Adjust the heat supplied to setup by properly adjusting dimmer. Heat input should be recorded from the values of voltage and current. 3. Adjust the flow rate of water entering in helical coil in a way to maintain constant flow rate after enough heating of liquid. 4. Note down the various thermocouple reading with the help of temperature indicator at steady state. 5. Carry out the experimentation for the various values of heat input and by changing the mass flow rate.

CRITERIA FOR SELECTION OF COMPONENT

Helical Coil : The material selection for the helical coil is such that, it must have high thermal conductivity & should be easy to bend.

Cylindrical Tank: The criteria for selection of cylindrical tank should be such that, the helical coil arrangement, the heater and stirrer for agitation must accommodate in it. Thermocouple and Digital Temperature Indicator : To record the various temperature of water inside the coil at various distances

Dimmer stat: is selected to fulfill the requirement of varying heat input to analyze the performance of heat transfer between water & various solution
Stirrer : For proper mixing of various solution & to increase the turbulence

Heating Coil : A 1500 watt drum heating coil is used to heat the bath solution in the tank.

CONCLUSION: On the basis of above results and discussions studies we may conclude that the helical coil we will be using for our project will show considerably high convective heat transfer.

The experimental work carried for the convective heat transfer analysis in a helical coil, can be further studied by emphasizing on the effect of number of turn of coils, curvature ratio and by circulating the surrounding fluid over the coil.
