Introduction
Green Building, also known as sustainable building, is the practice of creating structures and using processes that are environmentally responsible and resourceefficient throughout a building's life-cycle

THIS IS NOT A GREEN BUILDING !!!

A building which is constructed in an ecofriendly environment cannot be called as a Green Building

o It is applicable to any type of buildings & existing buildings o Green buildings are designed to reduce the overall impact of the built environment on human health and the natural environment by:
Efficiently using energy, water, and other resources Protecting occupant health and improving employee productivity Reducing waste, pollution and environmental degradation

Conventional & Green Building

conventional building

Green building

Functionality & appearance both are same Difference is in approach - Concern for Resource conservation & human productivity

Green building rating system

Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED)is an internationally recognized green building certification system, providing third-party verification. Developed by the U.S. Green building council (USGBC)

Typical Features of Green Buildings

Sustainable Sites
Reuse of existing buildings and the preservation of the surrounding environment. Sediment and erosion control- reduce negative impacts on water & air quality Reduce site disturbance - Conserve existing natural areas and restore damaged areas

Alternative Transportation - Reduce pollution and land development impacts Minimize Heat Island Effect Light pollution reduction- Eliminate light trespass from the building and site Urban redevelopment

Energy efficiency
Minimum Energy Performance minimum level of energy efficiency for the base building and systems. E.g. effective window placement CFC Reduction in HVAC&R EquipmentReduce ozone depletion.

Optimize Energy Performanceincreasing levels of energy performance & to reduce environmental impacts associated with excessive energy use. E.g. Use ENERGY STAR Qualified Products On site renewable energy - to reduce environmental impacts associated with fossil fuel energy use. E.g. solar & wind power

Water efficiency
Rain water harvesting system- Optimize ground water usage and increase its recharge Water Efficient Landscaping- Limit or eliminate the use of potable water for landscape irrigation.

Innovative Wastewater technologies Reduce generation of wastewater and potable water demand E.g. dual plumbing that recycles waste water Water Use Reduction - reduce the burden on municipal water supply and wastewater systems. E.g. water conserving fixtures such as ultra-low flush toilets and low-flow shower heads.

Materials efficiency
Storage & Collection of Recyclablesreduction of waste generated by building occupants Building reuse - reduce environmental impacts of new buildings as they relate to materials manufacturing and transport. Construction Waste Management- Redirect reusable materials to appropriate sites.

Resource Reuse- reduce demand for virgin materials Regional Materials- Increase demand for building materials and products that are extracted and manufactured within the region Recycled Content- products that incorporate recycled content materials

Rapidly Renewable MaterialsE.g. bamboo (because bamboo grows quickly) Certified Wood -Encourage environmentally responsible forest management.

Indoor environmental quality

Minimum IAQ PerformanceEstablish minimum indoor air quality (IAQ) performance. Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Monitoring Ventilation Effectiveness- delivery and mixing of fresh air E.g. properly designed Heating, Ventilation and Air- Conditioning (HVAC) system

Construction IAQ Management Plan- Prevent IAQ problems resulting from the construction/renovation process Indoor Chemical & Pollutant Source Control .E.g. reduce building products emit toxic gases, such as Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) and formaldehyde

Innovation & Design Process

LEED Accredited Professional LEED Innovation Credits -innovative performance in Green Building categories.

Benefits of Green Buildings

They can reduce respiratory diseases by 9-20% They increase occupant performance by 6-26% Their occupants have 15% less absenteeism compared to those in other buildings

Green building- examples

IGP office in Gulbarga The first Government Green building

CONFEDERATION OF INDIAN INDUSTRY (CII) SOHRABJI GODREJ GREEN BUSINESS CENTRE HYDERABAD

Today a variety of green building projects are coming up in the country

Residential complexes Exhibition centers Hospitals Educational institutions Laboratories IT parks Airports Government buildings and corporate offices

Conclusion
Technology needs to overweigh cost factor so that green buildings become viable. There is a large need of awareness of technology. By the year 2050 it is estimated that residential, commercial and institutional buildings will consume38% of global energy and release 3800 mega tones of carbon in the atmosphere.

Climate change by itself can also precipitate larger energy demand as people seek greater comfort levels in more extreme conditions. Its the need of the day for every new construction to be a green building and to modify the present buildings with its features
