What is a KPO?

Knowledge process outsourcing (KPO) is a

form of outsourcing, in which knowledgerelated and information-related work is carried out by workers in a different company or by a subsidiary of the same organization, which may be in the same country or in an offshore location to save cost.

This includes research and work on

intellectual property, equity and finance, analytics, market research and data management, etc.

Process transparency is a major barrier to

using KPO services. Many organizations do not track carefully which decisions are made by whom, and rely so much on informal social processes (and "soft skills") that it is unclear how much the use of KPO would disrupt existing operations.

Future Scenario
The share of Indian KPO sector was 56 percent of the global KPO sector in 2003. By 2010, Indian KPO sector will have 71 percent share of the global KPO sector.

In 2003, USD 0.72 billion revenue was generated by the Indian KPO industry, contributing around 0.24 % to the Indian service sector. This figure is expected to reach 1.78 % by 2010.

As estimated, the BPO exports will be $20 billion and KPO exports will be $12 billion by 2010.
