POLYMER CONCRETE THE CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL OF XXI CENTURY

M.MANJULA ROLL NO :11012D2012

DEFINITION
Concrete polymer materials may be defined as

concrete with or without Portland Cement to which has

been added, either in the hardened state or to fresh concrete during mixing, a chemical system subsequently

polymerized. The chemical system is generally a liquid

and may be composed of monomers, resins, polymer solutions, or polymer emulsions, which are converted to a solid plastic by polymerization.

INGREDIENTS:

PRIMARY INGREDIENTS: SAME AS TRADITIONAL CONCRETE LIKE - FINE AGGREGATE - COARSE AGGREGATE - CEMENT - WATER ADDITIVES: - POLYESTER, VINYL ESTER OR NORMAL EPOXY - BINDERS - FILLERS LIKE QUARTZ, LIMESTONE,SANDSTONE AND DOLOMITE

2.POLYMER CONCRETE MIXER

4.AUTOCASTER CONTINUOUS CASTING MACHINE

BENEFITS

OFFERS DIFFERENT BENEFITS DEPENDING ON THE RESINS USED: - FURAN RESINS WHICH CAN WITHSTAND HIGH TEMPERATURES - POLYUREA RESINS WHICH CAN WITHSTAND CORROSION THE ACRYLIC BINDERS SET VERY QUICKLY AND OFFER RESISTANCE TO WEATHERING THE EPOXIES CREATE A VERY STRONG MATERIAL THAT SHRINKS VERY LITTLE AS IT CURES

WHERE POLYMER CONCRETE IS USED

USED FOR MANY KINDS OF SPECIALISED CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS USED TO JOIN TWO DIFFERENT COMPONENTS

USED TO PROVIDE A STRUCTURE OR BASE

USED IN ELECTRICAL OR INDUSTRIAL CONSTRUCTION WHERE THE CONCRETE NEEDS TO LAST A LONG TIME AND BE RESISTANT TO MANY TYPES OF CORROSION

STRENGTH

THE AVERAGE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH IF BETWEEN 100 N/mm2 TO 120 N/mm2. THE EXACT COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH VARIES DEPENDING UPON THE BRAND OF POLYMER AND TYPE OF MATERIAL USED AS BINDER: - POLYMER METHYL METHACRYLATE CONCRETE HAS A COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF 80 N/mm2 AFTER ONE HOUR OF SETTING AND 120 N/mm2 AFTER 7 DAYS OF SETTING THE FLEXURAL STRENGTH IS BETWEEN 35 N/mm2 AND 37N/mm2 AFTER EIGHT HOURS THE TENSILE STRENGTH IS BETWEEN 18N/mm2 TO 20N/mm2 AFTER THE MATERIAL IS ALLOWED TO SET FOR 7 DAYS.

ADVANTAGES

MAIN ADVANTAGEOUS PROPERTY IS ITS RESISTANCE TO A WIDE RANGE OF SOLVENTS AND OILS. IT IS RESISTANT TO ACIDS WITH A PH LEVEL RANGING FROM 0 TO 14 LIKE HYDROCHLORIC ACID, FOMIC ACID, ACETIC ACID,CHLORIDES AND AMMONIUM SULPHATE. IT DOESNOT CORRODE IN THE PRESENCE OF HYDROCARBONS SUCH AS ACETONE, GASOLINE, ETHANE, METHANOL, PETROLEUM, DIESEL AND VEGETABLE OILS. THIS TYPE OF CONCRETE OFFERS EXCELLENT RESISTANCE AGAINST WATER.

BRICKFORM TEXTURED TILES

MANHOLE COVERS

GARDEN STRUCTURES

DISADVANTAGES
POLYMER CONCRETE CANNOT BE MIXED BEFOREHAND. IT MUST BE MIXED VERY PRECISELY AND VERY THOROUGLY. THE CHEMICALS USED CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS AND EVERY ONE NEARBY MUST WEAR MASKS AND SKIN PROTECTION. EVEN IF THE RESINS USED ARE NOT VERY DANGEROUS, THE SMELL OF THE RESINS IS UNBEARABLE .

CONCLUSIONS

THE POLYMER CONCRETE IS REFERRED AS THE CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL OF XXI CENTURY OWING TO THEIR OUTSANDING PERFORMANCE . RESEARCH CARRIED OUT COOPERATIVELY SINCE 1966 BY THE BUREAU

OF RECLAMATION AND THE FORMER OFFICE OF SALINE WATER, THE BROOKHAVEN NATIONAL LABORATORY,
AND THE ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION HAS INDICATED THAT IMPREGNATION AND POLYMERIZATION PROCESSES HAVE INDUCED SUBSTANTIALLY IMPROVED STRUCTURAL AND DURABILITY PROPERTIES IN POLYMER-IMPREGNATED CONCRETE FORMED AS COMPARED TO THE CONVENTIONAL CONCRETE. THE MAXIMUM INCREASE IN STRENGTH IS UPTO ALMOST FOUR TIMES HAVE BEEN OBTAINED

WATER PERMEABILITY HAS BEEN REDUCED TO NEGLIGIBLE VALUES AND WATER ABSORPTION HAS BEEN DECREASED BY AS MUCH AS 95 PERCENT.

FREEZE-THAW RESISTANCEHAS BEEN GREATLY IMPROVED, AS HAS CORROSION RESISTANCE TO DISTILLED WATER, SULPHATE SOLUTION, AND ACID

OWING TO THE PROPERTY OF POLYMER CONCRETE TO APPEAR AS NATURAL STONE BUT DEVOID OF HEAVINESS AND EASY CONSTRUCTION , IT IS EXTENSIVELY USED FOR BEAUTIFICATION WORKS LIKE PAVING SLABS, TEXTURED BRICKWORK, FLOOR TILES, GARDEN FURNITURE AND OTHER MODERN CONSTRUCTIONS.
