COMPARISON THE TWO RAIN The first (Former) rain is moderate, while the final (Latter) Rain falls in great abundance.

IMPORTANCE OF THESE RAINS
Both rains are of utmost importance in Palestine. The entire agricultural program and economy of the country is dependent upon these two rains

PURPOSE OF THE EARLY RAINS The Early Rain softened the parched ground, making it possible to be broken up and sown with seed. The Early Rain also caused the seed to germinate and to spring up out of the ground, but not to fully maturity.

PURPOSE OF THE LATTER RAINS
The latter rain brought the grain to full maturity. The grain could not ripen; there could be no harvest without the Latter Rain

THE ABSOLUTE INDISPENSABILIT Y OF BOTH RAINS
The Early Rain was absolutely essential for the softening of the soil and sowing and germination of the seed, the Latter Rain was absolutely indispensable to the maturing or ripening of the grain for the harvest.

THE INTERDEPENDECE OF THE TWO RAINS UPON EACH OTHER
The harvest was dependent upon both rains. Each was wholly dependent upon the other. The Early Rain without the latter rain would be of no avail. And the latter rain without the Early rain would result in no harvest.

falling near the close of the season, ripens the grain and prepares it for the sickle. The Lord employs these operations of nature to represent the work of the Holy Spirit. As the dew and the rain are given first to cause the seed to germinate, and then to ripen the harvest, so the Holy Spirit is given to carry forward, from one stage to another, the process of spiritual growth.

In immediate connection with the scenes of the great day of God, the Lord by the prophet Joel has promised a special manifestation of His Spirit. Joel 2:28. This prophecy received a partial fulfillment in the outpouring of the Spirit on the Day of Pentecost; but it will reach its full accomplishment in the manifestation of divine grace which will attend the closing work of the gospel.

What was the result of the outpouring of the Spirit on the Day of Pentecost? The glad tidings of a risen Saviour were carried to the uttermost parts of the inhabited world. As the disciples proclaimed the message of redeeming grace, hearts yielded to the power of this message. The church beheld converts flocking to her from all directions. Backsliders were reconverted.

Sinners united with believers in seeking the pearl of great price. Some who had been the bitterest opponents of the gospel became its champions. The prophecy was fulfilled, "He that is feeble. . . shall be as David; and the house of David . . . as the angel of the Lord." Zechariah 12:8. Every Christian saw in his brother a revelation of divine love and benevolence. One interest prevailed;

one subject of emulation swallowed up all others. The ambition of the believers was to reveal the likeness of Christ's character and to labor for the enlargement of His kingdom.

Mr. Jones.any attempt to enforce religious observances only enforces hypocrisy and multiplies sin, because love for God is essential to every act of religious duty. For a man to tender obedience or homage to God when he has no love for God in his heart, only dishonors God, and does violence to his own nature. For anybody to obey God, or perform religious observances from interested motives, is sin; and for the State to exert its power in compelling men to act religiously, and pretend to honor God when they have in the heart no love for God, is only to force them into hypocrisy, and to compel them to commit sin, which, increased
and multiplied by the exertion of national power, can end only in ruin, and that speedilyIn this way, men being constrained to mask their thoughts, there arises a habit of securing safety by falsehood, and of purchasing impunity with deceit. In this way, fraud becomes a necessity of life; insincerity is made a daily custom; the whole tone of public feeling is vitiated; and the gross amount of vice and of error fearfully increased.
Consequently, it is only at its own peril that the State can ever enforce the observance of a day of rest. More than this, for the State to allow itself to be dictated to by the church as is here proposed by Mr. Small, is to render the church superior to the civil power, which can end in nothing but a religious despotism, which is the worst of all despotisms. Thus by every line of reasoning that can spring from the
subject, it is demonstrated that for the State to fix a day of compulsory rest can only end in evil. Therefore, my proposition is proved, that Sunday laws are not for the good of anybody.

sound the message of the third angel, who is flying in the midst of
heaven, proclaiming the note of warning, the commandments of God, and the testimony of Jesus Christ.

habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird." The message of the fall of
Babylon, as given by the second angel, is repeated, with the additional mention of the corruptions which have been entering the churches since 1844. The work of this angel comes
in at the right time to join in the last great work of the third angel's message as it swells to a loud cry. And the people of God are thus prepared to stand in the hour of temptation, which they are soon to meet. I saw a great light resting upon them, and they united to fearlessly proclaim the third angel's message. {EW 277.1}
The time is not far distant when the test will come to every soul. The mark of the beast will be urged upon us. Those who have step by step yielded to worldly demands and conformed to worldly customs will not find it a hard matter to yield to the powers that be, rather than subject themselves to derision, insult, threatened imprisonment, and death. They will stand as faithful watchmen upon the walls of Zion,--not to hide sin, not to flatter the wrong-doer, not to obtain the sympathy of their brethren, but to meet the approval of God. They will not suppress one syllable of truth that should be brought out, in reproof, or warning, or in vindication of the righteousness of the oppressed, in order to gain the favor and influence of any one. IN A CRISIS, THEY WILL NOT BE FOUND IN A NEUTRAL POSITION, BUT
THEY WILL STAND FIRMLY ON THE SIDE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS AND TRUTH, EVEN WHEN IT IS DIFFICULT TO TAKE THIS POSITION; AND
TO MAINTAIN IT MAY IMPERIL THEIR PROSPERITY, AND DEPRIVE

THEM OF THE FRIENDSHIP OF THOSE WHOM THEY LOVE.

-Testimonies to Ministers, p. 50. "God has a church on earth who are lifting up the downtrodden law, and presenting to the world the Lamb of God that taketh away the sins of the world. The church is the depositary of the wealth of the riches of the grace of Christ, and through the church eventually will be made manifest the final and full display of the love of God to the world that is to be lightened with its glory."
Christ has given to the church a sacred charge. Every member should be a channel through which God can communicate to the world the treasures of His grace, the unsearchable riches of Christ. There is nothing that the Saviour desires so much as agents who will represent to the world His Spirit and His character. There is nothing that the world needs so much as the manifestation through humanity of the Saviour's love. All heaven is waiting for men and women through whom God can reveal the power of Christianity. {AA 600.1}
The church is God's agency for the proclamation of truth, empowered by Him to do a special work; and if she is loyal to Him, obedient to all His commandments, there will dwell within her the excellency of divine grace. If she will be true to her allegiance, if she will honor the Lord God of Israel, there is no power that can stand against her. Zeal for God and His cause moved the disciples to bear witness to the gospel with mighty power. Should not a like zeal fire our hearts with a determination to tell the story of redeeming love, of Christ and Him crucified? It is the privilege of every Christian, not only to look for, but to hasten the coming of the Saviour. {AA 600.2}
The last rays of merciful light, the last message of mercy to be given to the world, is a revelation of His character of love. The children of God are to manifest His glory. In their own life and character they are to reveal what the grace of God has done for them. The light of the Sun of Righteousness is to shine forth in good works. {COL 416.1}
