The main technological areas of Eni's research activities are: -Upstream Oil & Gas -Midstream Oil & Gas -Downstream Gas -Downstream oil: processes -Downstream oil: products -Power generation and renewables -Environmental sustainability and carbon management

Technological Innovation to Create Value
• Recent history has shown how new technologies can have positive impact along the entire hydrocarbon value chain. In the 1990s, the application of highly innovative technologies made it possible to reduce exploration and development costs by 50-80% (depending on the geographic areas), to re-evaluate the proven reserves in the North Sea by more than 30%, to increase exploration success by 50-70% and to raise well productivity by more than 100%.

The Technological Challenges

• Eni is responding to the challenges and difficulties faced by the energy industry by developing innovative projects capable of identifying technology for supporting the competitiveness and growth of the market. • In the upstream sector the most interesting areas concern improving access to oil and gas resources, in order to counteract the depletion of deposits and to expand into other areas, and sulphur management, for developing oil and gas fields with H2S levels that are even higher than 15%.

Environmental management

Managing environmental problems in different production and territorial contexts located in all the continents is a complex challenge. In 2007 a total of 1,085 environmental, HSE and HSEQ integrated audits were carried out, an increase of 24.43% from 2006. In 2007 the frequency of reporting at the top of HSE performance consolidated in all business sectors doubled. Implementation of the knowledge management model on environmental problems continued and, more specifically, the practice community on reclamation was started up.
