Meaning:

- DHIRUBHAI AMBANI

“a person who sets up a business or businesses, taking on financial risks in the

hope of profit.

Definition:

Merriam-Webster: one who organizes, manages and assumes the risks of a business or enterprise.

DHIRUBHAI AMBANI

INTRODUCTION

  • Dhirubhai Ambani alias Dhirajlal Hirachand Ambani was born on December 28, 1932, at Chorwad, Gujarat, into a Modh family.

  • After doing his matriculation at the age of 16, Dhirubhai moved to Aden, Yemen.

  • Dhirubhai Ambani was married to Kokilaben Ambani and He as four children namely Mukesh Ambani, Anil Ambani, Nina Kothari and Deepti Salgaonka.

  • Dhirubhai Ambani returned from Yemen to India and started "Majin" in partnership with Champaklal Damani in 1958.

  • The first office of the Reliance Commercial Corporation was set up at the Narsinatha Street in Masjid Bunder.

  • Dhirubhai Ambani died on 6 th July 2002.

Kolilaben Dhirubhai Ambani got married to Dhirubhai Ambani in 1955. Mukesh was born on April 19, 1957 in Aden. Towards the end of 1958 Dhirubhai came back to Bombay. About Dhirubhai she says In his private life Dhirubhai fulfilled every role and responsibility

with aplomb. He was a caring husband a loving father an indulgent

grandfather and a loyal friend. He devoted a great deal of time and

energy to his children „s learning and to the development of their personalities. From Kokilaben‟s interview in MidDay A life, a wife and some strife How Dhirubhai helped her to expand her horizons.

Kokilaben wrote memoirs on the life of Dhirubhai Ambani ,his rise

in business as well as personal life, titled ,”Dhirubhai Ambani: The Man I Knew“, the Gujarati edition is named “DHIRUBHAI AMBANI :MAARA JEEVAN SATHI“. She was assisted in the book by daughter Dipti (Ambani) Salgaocar, who worked with her mother in conceptualizing and putting the 300-page tome together. It

comprises rare pictures of places and people associated with

Dhirubhai as well as intimate personal anecdotes of his life and work.

The Growth of World Called RELIANCE

  • Dhirubhai Ambani started his entrepreneurial career by selling "bhajias" to pilgrims in Mount Girnar over the weekends.

  • VIMAL was set up in 1966 by Dhirubhai and his brother Ramniklal.

  • Assisted by his two sons, Mukesh and Anil, Dhirubhai Ambani built India's largest private sector company, Reliance India Limited, from a scratch.

  • Dhirubhai Ambani is credited with shaping India's equity culture, attracting millions of retail investors in a market till then dominated by financial institutions. Reliance Industries was the first private sector company whose Annual General Meetings were held in stadiums.

  • With innovative instruments like the convertible debenture, Reliance quickly became a favourite of the stock market in the 1980s.

  • In 1992, Reliance became the first Indian company to raise money in global markets, its high credit-taking in international markets limited only by India's sovereign rating. Reliance also became the first Indian company to feature in Forbes 500 list.

AWARDS AND ACHIVEMENTS

Dhirubhai Ambani was named the Indian Entrepreneur of the 20th Century

by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).

 

A poll conducted by The Times of India in 2000 voted him "greatest creator of wealth in the century".

He was figured in The Sunday Times list of top 50 businessmen in Asia.

November 2000Conferred Man Of The Century award by Chemtech Foundation and Chemical Engineering World in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the growth and development of the chemical industry in India.

June 1998 - "Dean's Medal" by

School,

University

of

Pennsylvania, for setting an outstanding example of leadership.

Reliance now

Over time his business has diversified into a core

specialisation

in petrochemicals with additional

interests

in

telecommunications,

information

technology,

energy,

power,

retail,

textiles,

infrastructure

services,

capital

markets, and

logistics.

Following a Stroke in 1986, Ambani handed over control of Reliance to his sons Mukesh and Anil. Ambani died after a

Major Stroke on 6 July 2002 in Breach Candy Hospital.

After the death of Dhirubhai Ambani, the group was split into Reliance Industries Limited, headed by Mukesh Ambani, and Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (Reliance ADA Group), headed by Anil Ambani.
