Parts of Speech:Words are classified into different kinds or groups called Parts of Speech according to their use and function in a sentence. They are eight in number-Noun, Pronoun, Adjective, Verb, Adverb, Preposition, Conjunction and Interjection.

Noun:The Noun is a word used as the name of a person, place or thing. The word thing includes (i) all objects that we can see, touch, hear, smell or taste, and (ii) something we can think of but cannot perceive through our senses. There are five different kinds of noun.

Pronoun:The repetition of a noun in a sentence or a set of sentences is really boring. So, Grammar prescribes that instead of repeating the noun, we may use a word (for that noun) called pronoun. This leads us to a precise definition of Pronoun. The Pronoun is a word that we use instead of a noun.

Adjective:An Adjective is a word that qualifies or adds something to the meaning of a noun. Example - Madan is a good boy. (Boy of what kind?) In this example, good tells what kind of boy Madan is.

Some Facts About Adjectives and their Uses:Adjectives can be used in two ways-attributively and predicatively. When an adjective is placed just before the noun, its use is Attributive, but when it is used after the noun or pronoun, the use is called Predicative. Examples (i) This is a sweet mango. (Attributive) (ii) This mango is sweet. (Predicative)

Verb:Verb are words that show action. Every sentence must have a verb. A verb is not always one word. It may be made up of more than one word.

Auxiliary Verb:The words: am, is, are, was, and were are verb. They are forms of the verb to be. They are helping verb called auxiliary verb.

Transitive Verb:The verb which needs an object to make its meaning clear or complete is called a transitive verb.

Intransitive Verb:The intransitive verb does not need an object but the meaning is clear or complete.

The Finite Verb:The finite verb changes with the subject. The subject is the person, thing, animal or place we refer to. When the subject is in the first or second person or is plural, the verb does not change. When the subject is in the third person or is singular, the verb changes from, say, eat to eats. The verb eat is a finite verb. Every sentence must have a finite verb.

The Infinitive Verb:The infinitive is a verb that is followed by to and does not change with the subject.
