INTRODUCTION 33. Allaah chose Adam, Noah, the family of Abraham and the
family of 'Imran above the others of their times. 34. Offspring, one of the other, and Allaah is the All-Hearer, All-Knower.

The Qur‟an - The Family of Imran 3:33-4

THE BIRTH OF MARY • Anna, at an old age, prays to God for a male child
• She would dedicate the child to His service by preaching in the Temple of Jerusalem • Imran, in a dream, sees a male child • God answers Anna‟s supplication with a daughter Mary,

the mother of Jesus.

THE BIRTH OF MARY 35. When the wife of Imran said: "O my Lord! I have vowed
to You what is in my womb to be dedicated for Your services so accept this, from me. Verily, You are the AllHearer, the All-Knowing." 36. Then when she delivered, she said: "O my Lord! I have

delivered a female child," - and Allaah knew better what
she delivered, - "And the male is not like the female, and I have named her Mary, and I seek refuge with You for

her and for her offspring from Satan, the outcast."
The Qur‟an - The Family of Imran 3:35-6

THE GUARDIANSHIP OF MARY • Mary is orphaned at a young age
• Imran was a priest of the noblest order and much respected • Many people come forward to be Mary‟s guardian • Dispute arises as to who should be guardian • Potential guardians are asked to throw an iron pen into a

nearby river
• Whosever pen remains afloat on the river, is the Sign from God that he is the preferred choice

• While others failed, Zachariah‟s pen remains afloat, by a
miracle, and thus is chosen to be Mary‟s guardian

THE GUARDIANSHIP OF MARY 37. So her Lord accepted her with goodly acceptance. He
made her grow in a good manner and put her under the care of Zachariah … 44. This is of the news of the unseen, which We reveal to you [O Muhammad]. You were not with them, when they cast

lots with their pens as to which of them should be
charged with the care of Mary; nor were you with them when they disputed.

visit her, he found her supplied with sustenance. He said: "O Mary! From where have you gotten this?" She said, "This is from Allaah." Verily, Allaah provides sustenance to whom He wills, without limit."

38. At that time Zachariah invoked his Lord, saying: "O my
Lord! Grant me from You, a good offspring. You are indeed the All-Hearer of invocation."

The Qur‟an - The Family of Imran 3:37-8

THE BIRTH OF JOHN 2. A mention of the mercy of your Lord to His servant
Zachariah. 3. When he called out to his Lord a call in secret, 4. Saying: My Lord! Indeed! My bones have grown feeble and grey hair has spread on my head and I have never been

unblest in my invocation to You O my Lord.
5. And verily I fear my relatives after me, since my wife is barren. So give me from Yourself an heir [successor].

The Qur‟an - Mary 19:2-5 See also 21:89

6. Who shall inherit me and inherit the posterity of Jacob. And
make him, my Lord, one with whom You are well pleased. 7. O Zachariah! Verily, We give you the glad tidings of a son his name will be John; We have given that name to none before him. 8. He said: My Lord! How can I have a son when my wife is barren and I have reached extreme old age? 9. He said: So it will be. Your Lord says: It is easy for Me,

certainly I have created you before, when you had been

THE BIRTH OF JOHN 12. O John! Adhere to the Scripture [Torah] and We gave him
wisdom while yet a child, 13. And made him sympathetic toward people as a mercy from Us and pure from sins and he was righteous, 14. And dutiful toward his parents. And he was neither

arrogant nor disobedient.
15. And peace be upon him the day he was born, the day he dies and the day he will be raised up to life again!

• On the day that Jesus is 40 days old, she appears in public with the infant

THE BIRTH OF JESUS 16. And mention in the Book [O Muhammad, the story of] Mary, when she withdrew in seclusion from her family to a place facing east. 17. Then she placed for herself a screen from them; then We sent to her our angel [Gabriel], and he appeared before her in the form of a man in all respects. 18. She said: “Verily I seek refuge with the Most Beneficent from you if you do fear Allaah.”

The Qur‟an - Mary 19:16-18 See also 3:45

THE BIRTH OF JESUS 19. He said: “I am only a messenger from your Lord, (to announce) to you the gift of a righteous son. 20. She said: “How can I have a son, when no man has touched me, nor am I unchaste?” 21. He said: “So (it will be): Your Lord said, „that is easy for Me: and (We wish) to appoint him as a Sign to mankind and a Mercy from Us‟: And it is a matter decreed.”

THE BIRTH OF JESUS 27. Then she brought the baby, carrying him to her people. They said: O Mary! Indeed you have done an unheard of mighty thing. 28. O sister of Aaron! Your father was not a man who used to commit adultery nor was your mother an unchaste woman. 29. Then she pointed to him. They said: “How can we talk to one who is a child in the cradle?” 30. He (Jesus) said: “Verily I am a servant of Allaah: He has given me the Scripture [Injil] and made me a prophet;
The Qur‟an - Mary 19:27-30

31. And He has made me blessed whersoever I be, and has enjoined on me prayer and charity as long as I live; 32. And dutiful to my mother and made me not arrogant, unblest. 33. “Peace be upon me the day I was born and the day I die, and the day I shall be raised alive”! 34. Such is Jesus, son of Mary: a statement of truth, about which they dispute. 35. It befits not [the majesty of] Allaah that He should beget a son.
