Introduction
Fracture of engineering materials is a problem that society has faced for a
long

In

industry, designers often utilize computational simulations of fracture mechanics problems in life prediction of engineering structures. Life prediction of engine components, structural members of aircraft fuselage, riser pipes in offshore platforms and pipeline joints are examples of industrial problems in which three-dimensional (3-D) computational fracture mechanics analysis is broadly applied.

In the above cases, crack growth assessment is a major requirement, and

engineering decisions must be based on accurate evaluation of fracture mechanics quantities such as Stress Intensity Factors (S.I.F)

Here in this project, analysis of

cracks emanating from an elliptical hole and approaching other, has to be carried out which particularly emphasizes on determining the stress intensity factor for all the three modes of fracture and compared with the material fracture toughness value Kc

Motivation
Modern aircraft structures are designed using a damage tolerance philosophy. However, structural aging of the aircraft may significantly reduce the strength below an acceptable level; this raises many important safety issues. Hence fracture analysis of these aircraft component helps in structural integrity of the aircraft to sustain major damage and to avoid catastrophic failure.

LITERATURE REVIEW

LITERATURE REVIEW
A.Anand,L.J.Sudev,H.V.Laakshminarayana (Dec 2012) Determination of S.I.F for a Crack Emanating From a Rivet Hole in a Plate using Displacement Extrapolation Method have reported that for an applied tensile loads in an infinite plate having riveted holes ,the S.I.F. rises suddenly when the crack tip is near to the hole and the S.I.F. will drops down as the crack tip moves away from the hole and evaluated the S.I.F values for different crack length. A.Anand, L.J.Sudev(2012) Comparison of plane stress and Plane Strain Method for Crack Emanating from Rivet Hole in a Plate and approaching another has presented the comparison of results obtained under plane stress and plane strain method for a crack emanating from a rivet hole in a plate and approaching another. It was observed that the value of S.I.F evaluated by plane strain method is higher than the plane stress method. This rise in value is due to Poissons effect and stress developed in Z-direction. Consequently the plastic zone developed is smaller than developed under plane stress method. Anthony P.Parker(2012), Stress and Stress Intensity Factor Near Notches in Thick Cylinders has asserted that A crack originating from a notch exhibits a much higher cyclic SIF range during pressurization than the same length crack originating from the bore. This will cause much higher fatigue crack growth rates resulting in much shorter fatigue lifetimes.

L.estkov(2007), Fracture mechanics parameters of multilayer pipes, Institute of Physics of Materials University of Bohemia, (4) according to L. estkov, The computational model used for S.I.F (K ) estimation is based on KCALC procedure implemented in system ANSYS. The density of the employed mesh is sufficient for most crack lengths and the further refinements of the mesh had no influence on the results

OBJECTIVES
To study and analyze the crack emanating from a elliptical hole in a infinite plate.

To model the infinite plate containing elliptical hole using Catiav5 software

Mesh and analyze the model using ANSYS with crack tip singular elements and extraction of S.I.Fs (K1, K2,K3) for different crack lengths , under varied c/W ratio

Plotting will be done to analyze the behavior of different cracks length under varied c/w ratio

METHODOLOGY
ASSUMPTIONS:

Linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM). Plane strain problem.

The cracks emanating from an elliptical hole and approaching other is considered for the fracture analysis and is modeled using CATIA V5 software.

CAD model is imported to ANSYS ,meshing the surface and crack tip with quarter-point singularelements

The results will be validated by using benchmark and these results are then plotted for different c/W ratio and for different Crack lengths to understand the behavior of the stress intensity factor at the crack tip.

by applying B.C the SIFs(K1, K2, K3) at the crack tip may be computed using ANSYS KCALC command for Different a. Different c/w ratio b. Different Crack length
