The Pronouncement
Matthew 3:1-2 Now in those days John the Baptist *came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, saying, (2) "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." Mark 1:14-15 Now after John had been taken into custody, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God, (15) and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel." Mat 24:14 "This gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come.

Kingdom of God or Kingdom of Heaven
Two views (maybe more) 1. Two different Gospels (dispensational view) •Gospel of the kingdom •Gospel of grace 2. One Gospel •Eternal Gospel Revelation 14:6 And I saw another angel flying in midheaven, having an eternal gospel to preach to those who live on the earth, and to every nation and tribe and tongue and people; •Paul Preached both as the same Acts 20:24-25 "But I do not consider my life of any account as dear to myself, so that I may finish my course and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify solemnly of the gospel of the grace of God. (25) "And now, behold, I know that all of you, among whom I went about preaching the kingdom, will no longer see my face. •Risky preaching a different Gospel than Paul's Gal 1:8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed!

One or Two Kingdoms?
Book of Matthew is only book that contains “Gospel of the Kingdom” Matthew written to primarily to Jewish readers Jewish Tradition - Do not speak God’s name and do not write it often in fear of using God’s name in vain. Wrote G-D often Evidence in favor of Matthew being written to Jews Matthew’s reader were expected to know jewish customs the bread.“ Mat 15:2 "Why do Your disciples break the tradition of elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat

Mark’s readers needed the traditions explained Mar 7:1-5 The Pharisees and some of the scribes gathered around Him when they had come from Jerusalem, (2) and had seen that some of His disciples were eating their bread with impure hands, that is, unwashed. Additional evidence in the text Mat 19:23-24 And Jesus said to His disciples, "Truly I say to you, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. (24) "Again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.“ Again I say…. He is repeating the same message using Kingdom of God and Kingdom of heaven.

Two parallel verses between Matthew and Luke
Mat 5:3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven. Luke 6:20 And turning His gaze toward His disciples, He began to say, "Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.

The Old Testament Introduction - Exodus Moses is with God on Mount Sinai and God presents the covenant to Moses Exodus 19:5-6 'Now then, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be My own possession among all the peoples, for all the earth is Mine; (6) and you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.' These are the words that you shall speak to the sons of Israel." Where is the Kingdom? Husband/Wife Parent/Child Relationships with relatives Relationships at work Wherever the Kings people go. Different kinds of relationships

The kingdom after Sinai
• After Moses and Joshua – Judges were God’s conduit to lead Israel • Israel Rejects God as their King

1Sa 8:5-7 and they said to him, "Behold, you have grown old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now appoint a king for us to judge us like all the nations." (6) But the thing was displeasing in the sight of Samuel when they said, "Give us a king to judge us." And Samuel prayed to the LORD. (7) The LORD said to Samuel, "Listen to the voice of the people in regard to all that they say to you, for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me

God’s conditions for a king - Man whom would serve God allowing God to still lead. Saul anointed first king of Israel Saul blew it. He didn’t obey God and lost his annointing David is anointed king 1Sa 16:13-14 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon David from that day forward. And Samuel arose and went to Ramah. (14) Now the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD terrorized him. David was considered by God to be a man after His own heart.

The kingdom gets better defined. •David wants to build God a house or temple •God tells Nathan - tell David nope, you’re not the one who will build me a house… •But God will build the house of David 2Sa 7:10-11 "I will also appoint a place for My people Israel and will plant them, that they may live in their own place and not be disturbed again, nor will the wicked afflict them any more as formerly, (11) even from the day that I commanded judges to be over My people Israel; and I will give you rest from all your enemies. David’s Dynasty 2Sa 7:12-16 "When your days are complete and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your descendant after you, who will come forth from you, and I will establish his kingdom. (13) "He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. (14) "I will be a father to him and he will be a son to Me; when he commits iniquity, I will correct him with the rod of men and the strokes of the sons of men, (15) but My lovingkindness shall not depart from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you. (16) "Your house and your kingdom shall endure before Me forever; your throne shall be established forever."'" Solomon fulfills part of the prophecy Built the First Temple He was the seed of David Figurative Son of God But was not an everlasting Kingdom. He died

The History of the Kingdom of God (cont)
Jesus the Messiah fulfills the promise • Jesus built and is still building the temple that will last forever • Seed of David thru Mary’s linage • Son of God – Literally the son of God Mat 3:17 and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased." Heb 1:5 For to which of the angels did He ever say, "YOU ARE MY SON, TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU"? And again, "I WILL BE A FATHER TO HIM AND HE SHALL BE A SON TO ME"? •Jesus is resurrected and will be king forever

The Kingdom in the New Testament - The announcement - John
Mat 3:1-12 Now in those days John the Baptist *came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, saying, (2) "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." (3) For this is the one referred to by Isaiah the prophet when he said, "THE VOICE OF ONE CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS, 'MAKE READY THE WAY OF THE LORD, MAKE HIS PATHS STRAIGHT!'" (4) Now John himself had a garment of camel's hair and a leather belt around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey. (5) Then Jerusalem was going out to him, and all Judea and all the district around the Jordan; (6) and they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, as they confessed their sins. (7) But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, "You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? (8) "Therefore bear fruit in keeping with repentance; (9) and do not suppose that you can say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham for our father'; for I say to you that from these stones God is able to raise up children to Abraham. (10) "The axe is already laid at the root of the trees; therefore every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. (11) "As for me, I baptize you with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, and I am not fit to remove His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. The Kingdom in the New Testament – What Jesus said about it. Mar 1:14-15 Now after John had been taken into custody, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God, (15) and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel." The time has come, repent Jesus spoke about the kingdom in parables •Matthew 13 - sower and the soil, wheat and the tares, mustard seed •Matthew 20 - The wealthy land owner and the tenants •Matthew 22 - The wedding feast Why parables? Mat 13:10-11 And the disciples came and said to Him, "Why do You speak to them in parables?" (11) Jesus answered them, "To you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been granted.

The disciples preach the Kingdom of God Luke 10:1-11 Now after this the Lord appointed seventy others, and sent them in pairs ahead of Him to every city and place where He Himself was going to come. (2) And He was saying to them, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. (3) "Go; behold, I send you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. (4) "Carry no money belt, no bag, no shoes; and greet no one on the way. (5) "Whatever house you enter, first say, 'Peace be to this house.' (6) "If a man of peace is there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you. (7) "Stay in that house, eating and drinking what they give you; for the laborer is worthy of his wages. Do not keep moving from house to house. (8) "Whatever city you enter and they receive you, eat what is set before you; (9) and heal those in it who are sick, and say to them, 'The kingdom of God has come near to you.' (10) "But whatever city you enter and they do not receive you, go out into its streets and say, (11) 'Even the dust of your city which clings to our feet we wipe off in protest against you; yet be sure of this, that the kingdom of God

Mat 10:5-7 These twelve Jesus sent out after instructing them: "Do not go in the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter any city of the Samaritans; (6) but rather go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. (7) "And as you go, preach, saying, 'The kingdom of heaven is at hand.'
Paul preached concerning the Kingdom of God

Act 28:30-31 And he stayed two full years in his own rented quarters and was welcoming all who came to him, (31) preaching the kingdom of God and teaching concerning the Lord Jesus Christ with all openness, unhindered.

The Kingdom has come

Mat 12:23-28 All the crowds were amazed, and were saying, "This man cannot be the Son of David, can he?" (24) But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, "This man casts out demons only by Beelzebul the ruler of the demons." (25) And knowing their thoughts Jesus said to them, "Any kingdom divided against itself is laid waste; and any city or house divided against itself will not stand. (26) "If Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself; how then will his kingdom stand? (27) "If I by Beelzebul cast out demons, by whom do your sons cast them out? For this reason they will be your judges. (28) "But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. If by the Spirit of God I do these… Spirit of God has come The power of the Holy Spirit was indicative of the kingdom being there.

It’s here but they can’t see it. Luke 17:20-21 Now having been questioned by the Pharisees as to when the kingdom of God was coming, He answered them and said, "The kingdom of God is not coming with signs to be observed; (21) nor will they say, 'Look, here it is!' or, 'There it is!' For behold, the kingdom of God is in your midst." In your midst – The kingdom was all around them. Jesus was the King, and his followers went everywhere he went. So the King and His Kingdom were there. Why can’t they see it?

The History of the Kingdom of God (cont) How important is the Kingdom of God? The end will not come until it has been preached to the whole world Mat 24:14 "This gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come.

The Messiah
Israel’s Expectation Mat 22:41-45 Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question: (42) "What do you think about the Christ, whose son is He?" They *said to Him, "The son of David." (43) He *said to them, "Then how does David in the Spirit call Him 'Lord,' saying, (44) 'THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD, "SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND, UNTIL I PUT YOUR ENEMIES BENEATH YOUR FEET"'? (45) "If David then calls Him 'Lord,' how is He his son?" Son of David or Son of God: The Lord said to my Lord Pharisees expected a Messiah like David Disciples Acts 1:6-8 So when they had come together, they were asking Him, saying, "Lord, is it at this time You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?" Are you the King of the Jews? John 18:33-37 Therefore Pilate entered again into the Praetorium, and summoned Jesus and said to Him, "Are You the King of the Jews?" (34) Jesus answered, "Are you saying this on your own initiative, or did others tell you about Me?" (35) Pilate answered, "I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests delivered You to me; what have You done?" (36) Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, then My servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not of this realm." (37) Therefore Pilate said to Him, "So You are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice." Was Pilate asking because he wanted to know for his own reasons? Was he asking because of the accusations? Not of this realm - Not of the physical realm Pilate lived in

The Messiah’s purpose He is the king He was born to be king He testifies to the truth Everyone who is of the truth hears His voice The remnant - A king is only a king if he has subjects

The Kingdom of God (Cont)
The Kingdom of God is a spiritual kingdom John 3:1-10 Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews; (2) this man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, "Rabbi, we know that You have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him." (3) Jesus answered and said to him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God." (4) Nicodemus *said to Him, "How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born, can he?" (5) Jesus answered, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. (6) "That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. (7) "Do not be amazed that I said to you, 'You must be born again.' (8) "The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit." (9) Nicodemus said to Him, "How can these things be?" (10) Jesus answered and said to him, "Are you the teacher of Israel and do not understand these things?

The Gospel of the Kingdom (Cont)
Paul faced trials preaching the Gospel of the kingdom.

Act 17:1-10 Now when they had traveled through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews. (2) And according to Paul's custom, he went to them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures, (3) explaining and giving evidence that the Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead, and saying, "This Jesus whom I am proclaiming to you is the Christ." (4) And some of them were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, along with a large number of the God-fearing Greeks and a number of the leading women. (5) But the Jews, becoming jealous and taking along some wicked men from the market place, formed a mob and set the city in an uproar; and attacking the house of Jason, they were seeking to bring them out to the people. (6) When they did not find them, they began dragging Jason and some brethren before the city authorities, shouting, "These men who have upset the world have come here also; (7) and Jason has welcomed them, and they all act contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus." (8) They stirred up the crowd and the city authorities who heard these things. (9) And when they had received a pledge from Jason and the others, they released them. (10) The brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea, and when they arrived, they went into the synagogue of the Jews.

Ambassadors for the Kingdom

2Corinthians 5:20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. God makes his appeal through us Eph 6:18-20 With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints, (19) and pray on my behalf, that utterance may be given to me in the opening of my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel, (20) for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in proclaiming it I may speak boldly, as I ought to

At War?
The Kingdom of God is at war •We are covertly at war •Spies out in the field •Who are we warring against? Eph 6:10-17 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. (11) Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. (12) For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. (13) Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. (14) Stand firm therefore, HAVING GIRDED YOUR LOINS WITH TRUTH, and HAVING PUT ON THE BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS, (15) and having shod YOUR FEET WITH THE PREPARATION OF THE GOSPEL OF PEACE; (16) in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. (17) And take THE HELMET OF SALVATION, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Our enemy is Satan, not the nations of the world. Not politics

David The type and Shadow
David was a type and a shadow

David’s anointing and rejection
•David was anointed king and indwelled by the Holy Spirit •The Holy Spirit left Saul •Who was God’s king? •Who was the people’s King? •David, God’s anointed did not try to assert his kingdom over Saul’s •The older king, Saul persecuted God’s anointed king David (God’s choice was rejected by Saul and Israel as they continued to serve Saul.) •David fled •David was joined by 400 men as he fled from Saul •Later, another 600 joined God’s anointed •These men served him as their king •These men became his administration when he did become King over all of Israel

Jesus’ Anointing and Rejection

•Jesus established the Kingdom 2000 years ago •It will continue forever into the future •It will continue to grow and at some point, the olive tree, or mustard tree, or leaven will cover the whole earth •As believers, we are in the Kingdom – Colossians 1:13-14 For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, (14) in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

For from Zion will go forth the law, Even the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. (3) And He will judge between many peoples And render decisions for mighty, distant nations. Then they will hammer their swords into plowshares

Good News - Righteousness, Peace, Joy (continued) Peace John 16:33 "These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world." Philippians 4:6-7 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. (7) And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. The world must have parties and toys to enjoy life and live in peace. We only need to trust in Jesus

Good News - Righteousness, Peace, Joy (continued)

•Peace and joy are spiritual •They are fruit of the spirit •Our victories are not not political, not moral victories in government and judiciaries As the Kingdom continues to come in, it will not be with armies and wars. •Seeds fall on good ground and produce fruit •The wheat is being sown and will reap a harvest

Act 17:30 "Therefore having overlooked the times of ignorance, God is now declaring to men that all people everywhere should repent, Mat 22:1-14 Jesus spoke to them again in parables, saying, (2) "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son. (3) "And he sent out his slaves to call those who had been invited to the wedding feast, and they were unwilling to come. (4) "Again he sent out other slaves saying, 'Tell those who have been invited, "Behold, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and my fattened livestock are all butchered and everything is ready; come to the wedding feast."' (5) "But they paid no attention and went their way, one to his own farm, another to his business, (6) and the rest seized his slaves and mistreated them and killed them. (7) "But the king was enraged, and he sent his armies and destroyed those murderers and set their city on fire. (8) "Then he *said to his slaves, 'The wedding is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy. (9) 'Go therefore to the main highways, and as many as you find there, invite to the wedding feast.' (10) "Those slaves went out into the streets and gathered together all they found, both evil and good; and the wedding hall was filled with dinner guests. (11) "But when the king came in to look over the dinner guests, he saw a man there who was not dressed in wedding clothes, (12) and he *said to him, 'Friend, how did you come in here without wedding clothes?' And the man was speechless. (13) "Then the
